Leaking Rear Shocks

Just had the 60000K servce done. Was advised that the rear shocks are leaking and need to be replaced. Whilst they will be done under warranty and I should incur no cost. Is 60000Ks normal life for the factory shocks?

Re: Leaking Rear Shocks

+1

shockies perhaps the simplest piece of automotive technology, they should enjoy a hastle free life, almost out living the car itself.

that said, they emit heat relative to the force applied to them, so in extreme cases they can overheat and burst. a case likely to produce this kind of heat, is multiple severe bumps over an extended period of time. i.e. 100 speed bumps in a row, less than a meter apart.
in reality, a situation that could cause that much heat to a damper, is nonexistent.

maybe a rock or similar may have flicked up whilst driving and damaged it??

Cam.

Re: Leaking Rear Shocks

When they advised me, they seemed to imply that both were leaking.

When I go back to have them replaced, I will seek clarification and their thoughts on how they have come to fail.

Considering the easy life they have had, it was quite a surprise.

Re: Leaking Rear Shocks

Will do.

Update

Called Westpoint Nissan today, asked why both shocks have failed so early. They said there was no particular reason, but confirmed it was both that were leaking. Went onto say that I was lucky as the warranty only covers leaking shocks, meaning that if only one was leaking they only replace one, even though it makes good sense to replace both.

Re: Leaking Rear Shocks

Had the rear shocks replaced on Friday, the paper work stated that the internal seal had perished.

Feels firmer in the rear end now, did not realise how bad they were.

Re: Leaking Rear Shocks

Interesting. I had my Exy serviced today. 35k service, and I was informed that three of my struts were leaking!

They noted that I have aftermarket suspension (i.e. pedders spring lift), and said that they needed to get nissan australia approval to replace them under warranty! I'm expecting them to come back and tell me that it's not covered.

To have 3 fail at only 35k is a bit disturbing. I recall seeing somewhere that even with the pedders lift, the shocks are still within the recommended range/angle?

Re: Leaking Rear Shocks

At least they are going to ask Nissan, usually they won't even bother if its not a genuine Nissan part.
If Nissan don't cover it you will most surely be covered py Pedders.

Good luck with it.

Re: Leaking Rear Shocks

shockies are like pistons with teflon piston rings inside. they do wear out depending on how you drive and on what surfaces you drive on. they usually leak if you get heaps of dirt and dust on the piston stem bit and it destroys the oil seal and they slowly weap oil. look at the pic on the side of this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_absorber it shows the parts etc.
