Re: CV Boot under warranty?

G'day all,
I think this is the right place for this question, as I didn't really want to start a new thread.
I am having some light vibration coming through the steering and can hear/feel a very low whir, if that makes sense. I'm suspecting that it might be CV boot/joint related, given that I got a lift put on a few months ago.
I've had a quick look at the CV boots, but being a bit of a gumby I'm not sure what I'm looking for exactly. The boot is covered by a black concertina like casing. I'm assuming that this isn't the boot. Can this be removed to inspect the boot/joint more closely? Nothing appears amiss from what I can see.
Thanks
Hi Joel,
The black concertina like casing is actually the boot and it protects the joint underneath. A worn boot wouldn't cause a steering vibration or sound but maybe a joint would. As previously said a worn CV joint usually produces a loud clicking noise on full lock. Other possible causes of the vibration/noise could be wheel balance/alignment or wheel bearing.
Just to add, I had to replace 3 CV boots on my 97 Forester over 4 years. The only sign that they had worn out was the grease that sprayed through my engine bay 8( .
Cheers, Mark.

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
I'm relieved to report that after getting it checked by nissan, it was just a loose wheel bearing and has been fixed under warranty.

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
Joel,
I would have been happier to find a torn or worn CV boot as I never like to hear of bearings comming loose

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
I was going to say exactly the same thing Dave. Loose bearings could mean problems with loose hubs and we know what this could lead to! (check THIS thread Joel)

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
I had noticed a split boot last week when rotating the tyres, and zip tied it up until today when I could get the repair done. Boot was the inner CV drivers side, and it certainly let go as the pictures display. Managed to do it without having to completely remove the shaft, and the new grease and boot from Nissan was 72 bucks.
Not to bad, the cage, shaft and rollers were all sweet after a good hit with Brake Clean and lot of rags. Outer boot was fine as well.
Dont believe it was the lift, I doubt these boots have been changed since original owner purchased and they have 150 thousand kms, so just one of those things.
Pics are....Grease explosion. Shaft out. New grease in.

Edit...did a search for CV boots and this was the most relevant thread I could find. Not exactly warranty though

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
And here I was thinking my oil changes are messy!!!
I assume the replancement boot wasn't a "split" one, as you would've been able to put one of those on without removing the shaft.

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
Nah, not a fan of the split boots really. Even the best "seal" in a split boot will tend to let in crap and corruption faster than a normal boot. Especially if used off road through water etc. its something else to worry about.
Bit of a PIA with a stock boot, but easier this way than removing the whole shaft.
Cheers

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
I discovered a split in my passenger side inner boot when changing the tyres recently. Not being a fan of paying lots of money, I looked around after Ryde Nissan quoted me $95 just for the parts. I found Evergreat CV that wanted $120-140 for parts and labour and then found CV Joint (Aust) which quoted $70 (including a $15 universal boot). I decided to go with them and found that you get what you pay for.
After the "mechanic" whacked the side of my car with the end of the airhose fitting I decided to watch him closely. Not knowing too much about the procedure, I am not sure whether his approach was right or not. I do remember the manual saying that care was needed to avoid damaging the seal where the shaft fits in the engine block and I did not see too much care exercised. A rattle gun (with the same torque setting) was used on all nuts and all nuts were re-used (the manual says the nuts on the shock absorber are single use). The job took about 45 min.
However the big shock came at the end when he was about to put the wheel back on, without cleaning off the grease he had put on the rotor at a couple of points. I stopped him and said the rotor should be cleaned. He got the rag he had been wiping his hands with and used it to smear the grease all around the rotor. I said that was not appropriate and it needed to be cleaned off properly. He went and got some petrol, which I said was inappropriate because it leaves an oily residue. He asked what should be used. I said metho and he then tried to tell me it was metho. One of his mates started to look at the can of degreaser like it would be helpful and I had to stop that train of thought. He then got some thinners and I insisted on doing the cleaning myself.
Eventually someone else (who 'seemed' to know what he was doing and seemed to be in charge) came along and insisted on taking over. He cleaned it properly. The first guy kept muttering "it doesn't matter" and the last guy told him it did.
I was glad to get out of there. The car drives fine, the brakes work well. I will let you know if the boot does not last.

Re: CV Boot under warranty?
CV Joint Aust sell their CV boots on ebay for the same $15, either inner or outer.
