Extending the Warranty Should I do it
I am just about to buy a new Sti and have agreed on the price and signed on the line,
they are now trying to hit me for paint protection (I said no) and extending the warranty..
I do very few kms (under 10 a year) and $1999 for the extra years seems a lot.
So should I bite or is it another dealer extra that is a rip off ?

Re: Extending the Warranty Should I do it
I didn't buy the extra protection, nor the paint protection.
You are still covered for recalls with or without the extra couple of years anyway. Also that means you have to wait another 2 years before doing any worthwhile mods to your Xy like extractors.
As for the paint protection, if you polish your Xy regularly there is no need to worry.

Re: Extending the Warranty Should I do it
Hi Doug,
You better be careful with this.
There are 2 types of extended warranty:
1. Nissan Australia (or manufacturers) warranty.
2. Dealer's extended warranty.
With the first one, you don't really need it now, as the new car would already be covered by the manufacturer's warranty for 3 year/100,000kms and you can extend the manufacturer's warranty at any time before the expiry of the 3 years, you will have the option to extend it by 2-3 years and it will cover everything the current Nissan warranty covers.
With dealer's extended warranty, it is not worth the paper it is written on as they usually lock you into servicing your car with that particular dealership and will not cover the cost of most parts, so it has many catches included in the fine print of it and it is very limiting as you might find a cheaper dealer who can service your car for much cheaper yet you won't be able to go there cause this dealer's warranty will be considered void. I'd stay clear from this extended warranty and save the money.

Re: Extending the Warranty Should I do it
Ive been offered the Nissan extra 3 years for $1100 from memory. The dealer confirmed Jalal's comment on being able to purchase this anytime within the std three year warranty period on a new car. I havent done it yet but I think I will before the end of this period, another item to keep the accountant busy

Most dealers now will throw in the extra 3 years dealer warranty for free provided you get the vehicle serviced there and there only.

Re: Extending the Warranty Should I do it
Wish I'd had the spare cash to extend the Nissan warranty. Would have saved drama with the cat converter disintegrating, and half the cost of renewal would replace my ailing aircon fan.
While many members of this forum have only ever had their vehicles in for regular servicing, my exy has had 4 warranty issues while still covered, plus the aircon fan about 3 months after expiry. It's made me a little nervous. If I ever purchase another new vehicle, I would definitely take the extended warranty, but I'd wait til just before the original was due to expire.

In most cases Julie you can only buy the dealer or extended warranty when you purchase the car.
Its uncommon to buy it say when you've got 2 weeks remaining on the Nissan warranty.

Re: Extending the Warranty Should I do it
Not the case with the Nissan extended warranty Tony. I bought the extended Nissan warranty for my wife's Tiida after buying it second-hand while it was still within the factory warranty period (55,000kms). I was able to get a refund of that warranty from Nissan when the car was written off as well, so you can cancel it at any time.
