Charlie Moreland Campout
Great car, nice drive, nice company and a peaceful campsite made for a great weekend.
We met up with Scot & Wendy at the Shell service station at 8.30. We had gotten there early and had breakfast so Scot got some ice and we planned our drive up to Charlie Moreland.
Scot and Wendy had been up there a few times so they took the lead and we made our way up through Lansborough and Maleny and got into the campsite at about 10.30.
We scouted the area and found a great site for all of us and set about putting the tents up. About 10 minutes into the setup, the rangers turned up to inspect our permits and although I had stuffed up and selected the wrong campsite online when I booked it, they let us stay. Phew......
After setting up we had some lunch and a visit from an inquisitive local, we off in search of some fun in the dirt.
With Scot leading it was left for me to eat dust, not much rain up this way for awhile so was very dry. We took off heading for Jimna and Mt Buggary through to Peach Trees where the roads were mostly flat forest drives so there was no end of complaints from my passengers - when are we getting to the good stuff.
A short stop at Lake Borumba an then we continued on our way back to the campground. The boys were happy to see some good stuff and I was of course in my element when we found some water and we got a chance to get off road onto the grass so Scot could practice some moves..
Back at the campsite , we sat and had a cuppa and relaxed and was entertained by some local possoms before getting dinner ready. After dinner and some chatting, we grabbed a hold of the torches and went for a walk and did a bit of spotlighting.
Off to bed for the night, we drifted off to the sounds of the bush, very relaxing.
We woke on Sunday morning to another brilliant day. Scot and Wendy were up early and went for a walk, we were just a bit lazy and slept in until 7.30. Breakky for everyone and then it was time to break camp.
Sunday's drive consisted of us checking out the other camp grounds around the area and we found more water to splash around in.
We found a couple of really great places for groups and we discussed another trip for the future.
We stopped in Maleny for lunch and then headed home.
Great weekend, thanks Scot & Wendy for leading the way and look forward to the next getaway. All up, we gave out 8 forum cards and spoke personally to 7 of them about the forum, so hopefully a few new members may join up.

Re: Charlie Moreland Campout
This was a great week-end away.
Like Jamie said we had a great car, nice drive and great company!
Met Black Thunda at the Shell service station Nudgee.
We had a brief discussion on who should lead the pack and Wendy suggested that we had been up there a few times before, so it was decided we take the lead and head for the camp grounds.
After getting the ice and some quick brekky , we headed off up the highway.
Once we got to the camp grounds we set up our tents and then grabbed a bite to eat and explained the trip we were going to do.
Wendy and I had done part of the Yabba tour from the dirty weekends book from lake Borumba thru to Charlie Moreland about a month ago but did not do the start as the one thing we were unsure of was the steep section that was mentioned.
The first thing we came across was a look-out so pulled up for a few shots. Here is one .
Then we continued over some very plain gravel roads which was not exciting at all.
We came to the Jimna fire tower to start the tour .
After a brief stop we headed off to find out how bad that steep section was and why you needed low gear?
We found the sign for Mt Buggary and then continued on our way.
Well we found that the road had recently been graded and was a bit loose.
The steep section was a fizzer!
Here is Black Thunda coming down the hill that was mentioned for low gear
Why would you need low gear for this?
We did not take many photo's of the dam nor the exciting part as in a future trip,we may have to go back as there was a lot of side tracks to explore.
At the bottom of the last leg of the tour close to the camp grounds we found water and decided that one time thru was not enough
Here are some shots of the fun!
.
On our way, I found a little hill to play on and test my skills and Jamie had a go as well and here is a shot of us when we were finished our fun!
On the way back to the camp ground, Jamie stopped for a quick chat with one of the locals,
.
When we got back to the tents it was time to unwind and get ready for dinner.
Had fun with the walk that night and also the spot lighting of the local fauna.
Sunday morning Wendy was up early and I got up out of bed at 6:30 am and the camp grounds was very quite, so Wendy and I decided to go for a walk and have a look around, while everyone else was asleep.
When we got back there was still no movement for a little while so Wendy and I decided to have breakfast.
So we fired up the bacon and eggs as well as toast .
Once everyone was up we packed our cars and I must say young Sam has a bright future ahead of him as a supervisor!
From the photo, you can see he takes his job seriously
Have got some video footage of the trip as well which I will post soon.
Regards Scot and Wendy

Re: Charlie Moreland Campout
No, it is fully closed off as it is in disrepair and would be dangerous to climb.

Re: Charlie Moreland Campout
Looks like you guys had a nice relaxed weekend to charge your batteries.
I can see why you need low range for that hill, Jamie was going down it. Now if he was going up, different kettle of fish.

Re: Charlie Moreland Campout
Looks like you had fun doing all that... Now to do something like that here would be interesting... most of our "outback" stuff is about a 3 day drive... and I don't have 3 days to give right now...
