Cooch does Watagans
Well today I played with the big boys from Opposite Lock ( about 19 of them)
We went to the Watagans and entered of Jilliby Rd onto what looked like private property through a locked gate.
We we entered the gate the fun started, lock mode straight away and from there it was only off 1 or 2 times.
I can honestly say that it was one of the hardest tracks I have ever done.
I was the only X Trail and all the others had big, 6 inch lifted 100 series cruisers, 110 Land Rovers, big big Patrols, Nissan Navaras with tyres the size of the Xy, Pajeros.
Every other vehicle dwarfed the Xy.
There were 20 of us.
Before we started we were handed our own Topographical maps of the area along with some stickers and some lollies.
The Xy made it everywhere the big boys went except one place where the rocks stepped down 6 times and each step was abot 500-600mm high, scarey stuff. 3 of them went down and the rest turned around.
I have never concentrated so much in a 4wd in my life.
It truley was an awesome track.
The Xy has some battle scares.
Scratched hubcaps before they poped off (then I removed them all together).
Scratched bottom black door trims.
Heaps of Blackberry bush scratches along the paintwork.
Crushed front mudflap which popped back out.
All that and I reckon I lost 5 kilo in sweat.
We travelled a total distance once hitting the dirt of 14 kms and that took us about 4 hours to do, so you can imagine what the terrain was like. The rain also didn't help cause once those highway tyres clogged up, they were just about useless.
The suspension worked unbelievably well, so glad I got it done.
All the guys were astounded that the Xy could get where they did. Although at one point if I never had 5 blokes pushing me up the hill, 2 guiding my front wheels as well as a set of Max Trax and some well placed rocks. I would have turned around and gone home early.
A big big thanks goes to Alan and Bruce from Opposite Lock for helping me out today.
That was the only aid I had all day, manual or mechanical (winch).
There will be video footage as well as a heap of photos on the Opposite Lock website. As soon as I get the link I'll put it in so you can all share this hell of a track.
edit, added a couple of things.

Awesome Tony, looking forward to the pics and vids.
Do you think the guys at Opposite Lock would do a trip just for us Xtrailers sometime now that they have seen what yours did ?

Re: Cooch does Watagans
Fantastic trip report and pics, Tony!
Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. I bet you walked a couple inches taller after completing the track ..... and I reckon many of the "real" 4WD owners would now have a totally different opinion of the Xy's capacity.
Well done mate!!

Thanks Stephen
I bet they are all in slight amazement when they saw what it could do.
When we had the briefing the trip leader even called it a Nissan Escape, but I was quick on correcting him he he.

Re: Cooch does Watagans
Top effort, Tony!
Shame about the battle scars, but once the footage and photos become available on the OL website, I'm sure there'll be alot more gobsmacked "real" 4WD'ers

Re: Cooch does Watagans
Not what I expected after reading the first part as I recall a trip to the Watagans with the man who started Opposite Lock and that involved travelling down some of the roads around Jilliby at close to 200k/hr in a BDA Escort.....Sounds like the boys still know how to have fun

Can't find any vids or photos on OL site... Do you need to be a member to view them?
