Re: blower fan
I am confident it is the fan resistor as suggested from the start, as there has been no reported cases of the fan selector switch going bust (except one case when left in full power position for an extended period of time (i.e. from Sydney to Cairns )
You will see the fan resistor attached to the blower fan housing when you remove the passenger glovebox, it'll be held by 2 screws.

Re: blower fan
Had the same problem, was the fan resistor. No speed on number 2 position.Removed glovebox. The resistor is located on bottom of fan motor unit against the firewall.Has a harness and is held in by two screws. If you can not see it,use a mirror and a stubby short phillips head screwdriver.Easy to change, just a bit hard to reach. My vechicle is a ST and the TI has a different set up and is electronic instead of the ST type which has ribbon flat resistor wire only. You can see the damage by eye.Make sure you order the right one cheers

Re: blower fan
Thanks Jalalski & Duxbac - you guys were spot on!
- Went to the wreckers last night and pulled a fan resistor out of another 2002 ST the same as mine (cost me $25). Took out the bottom cover of the glovebox, found the fan resistor (there is a large brown plug inserted into it - removed this) - got a stubby phillips head and removed the old one (was a bit hard to get the screws out as they are tricky to reach. Also noticed 2 areas on the resistor board that had tracks burnt out on it) - plugged in the new (read 2nd hand!) one in and - all is good again!
Thanks heaps again - was really starting to annoy me!

Re: blower fan
My blower fan started making noises today. Initially a fast rattle, which then becomes a slower sound like it is hitting something else. It's coming from the region of the dash/glovebox leftish side.
I know this isn't much to go on - are there a zillion things that can go wrong, or a specific few?
Would a car air conditioning place be able to offer me advice? Local dealer is not helpful.

Re: blower fan
Ive got the same problem, and no fix unfortunately. If I have the fan on, whenever I turn a sharp right a loud humming noise comes from under the passenger airbag. It only stops once I turn the fan off. Then all is cool until a make a hard right again with the fan on. Nissan dealers cant seem to make the noise happen, then I drive away and first right hander, HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Anyone else have this problem ?.

Re: blower fan
Take them for a drive around the block so they both feel how hard you corner to make the noise happen as well as hear the noise. They may also want to take the Xtrail back to the service dept without turning the fan off so they can check where the noise is coming from (or just pull over at the side of the road when the noise starts).

Re: blower fan
Scott,
Sounds like something is jamming the fan when you turn as it moves to one side. Have you removed the glovebox to have a look in there and see if there is something stuck inside the fan housing?
You could have something living there.

Re: blower fan
Living things have been found in aircons in the past - friend of mine was fixing the aircon in his girlfriends subaru. There was a rats nest made of maps and paper they'd dragged thru the back of the glovebox!
I'm sitting on the problem at the moment. Dunno whether that's a good or bad thing. It works just fine on 1 and 2, even 3. Today I drove about 11km back from the city all the way to work on 4 just to see what would happen and it was fine, but I went around corners carefully. However, jumped in the car after work, started it up and there was the rattle. Still is fine on the low speeds. Am just gunna hang out with that one and hope it lasts until I eventually get back to queensland and have a choice of dealers. At least it's cooling down a bit now and I don't really need to use it a lot of the time.

Re: blower fan
Just reading through these posts .. thought I'd add some comments.
The noises from the blower assy can be atttributed to small leaves and seeds and gravel if one doesn't have the AirCon filter element installed. The Exy came shipped without one apparently, cost saving or something. The cavity is there but no filter. Without the filter small bits of debris as large as raisins or malteesers can get sucked into the blower assy throught the Exy's fresh air intake. There is a W shaped vent, presumably shaped like this to prevent water getting in, under the plastic housing where the wipers lay to rest behind the firewall up the top at the base of the windscreen. There are some nice holes all along that strip where debris can accumulate. When you drive fast enough and have the air con running on either mode Fresh or Recirc that debris flicks up through the W shaped vent and eventually into your blower assy, sometimes jamming open your Recirc flap rendering it useless i.e. like always on Fresh mode smelling the outside world as if a window is open. Since the blower assy is a vertical drum shape with vanes it can hold quite a bit of stuff in there, about 2 cups worth. We had our Exy parked for some time under a tree which shed lots of teeny little leaves all over the car, perfect size to get sucked into the air con. Problem rectified once we purchased the air con filter element as it protects any large objects from falling into the blower assy. Be careful when swapping filters as debris can fall down into the fan assy. If it does get the old Vax out with a garden hose and shove it down there to clean anything out.
We still had debris in the air con conduits under the dash which would occasionally spit out at you around certain corners. LOL. It was a strange sensation but after working it out the noise vanished thanks to the air con filter. Thanks to the X-Trail shop for that one.
Hope that helps anyone.
