Hi Dave,
The error code P0335 suggests a malfunctioning and/or open circuit of the crank position sensor.
It is located under the car as show here:
You can visually check the wiring harness for any possible damage and check the sensor itself.
As your xtrail is a 2002 model it may fall under the recall for the crank position sensor which was announced by Nissan back in 2003 (details of the recall are found HERE)
Check you VIN against the affected range and if it had this recall done, this fault should be fixed by Nissan under that recall and free of charge.

I can't see a heat shield for the engine block, however I have made progress - I removed two brackets - one with 4x12mm bolts on the filter side of the intake manifold, and another below that which is just a cable-support bracket, and have managed to undo the bolt holding the sensor in place...
The tricky part will be to get the new sensor in place without getting it dirty, as I'm working by touch only. With the angle, I couldn't get enough grip to unclip the plug from the old sensor, so hopefully it might come out easier when the sensor is removed (although I can't get two hands down below the intake manifold, so that theory might not work anyway!).
edit: I got the plug off, but the tricky part is getting the old sensor out - the rubber o-ring is making it very difficult!
edit2: I found a way to access the sensor from under the car, but I can only just reach it with the full length of my arm, and it's more painful than from the top, and I still couldn't get enough strength to get the sensor out.
Tip for anyone else doing this themselves - remove the top of the air filter box and ducting/rubber hose to the intake manifold (and associated sensor plugs) as well as the brackets previously mentioned. I got the sensor out first go after doing this!
Now to try and find a mirror to make sure I get the new sensor in first go without dragging in a heap of dirt on the way into the hole...

I thought of that, and should've done it. The mirror wasn't much help as the area was too cramped to be able to see what I was doing. I did manage to take a few photos of the sensor hole (as best I could) and will attach them later.
I started the engine and the check-engine light is still on, so I will perform the ECU- reset later tonight...
edit: check-engine light is now out thanks to Jalal's link in this thread, and I confirmed the error code is the same as previously mentioned by others in relation to the fault (0335).
Will reset the ECU tomorrow to force it to re-learn now the K&N filter is back in. A short trip this afternoon confirmed the code did not return, and the back-off revs are steady and no longer fluctuating as they have been lately, and the N & P idle speed has returned to normal.
Also worth mentioning that I have a spare sensor (as they come in pairs) so if you're reading this and want one urgently, PM me and I'll see what I can do. I don't foresee me needing the second one (for the camshaft(s)), but then again, I didn't foresee me needing a new crank angle sensor for a 5-year-old barely-modified car anyway. How come I managed to modify the SSS so much and never had any problems in just as many years? 
The only thing I can think of that may have caused it to fail prematurely is the extra heat built-up in the engine bay (especially between the block and fire-wall, right where the sensor is located) could be due to the heat-shield restricting air-flow through the engine-bay - It may have just been chance that it failed near the middle of winter...
Here is the hole for the sensor after the old sensor was removed. I had to use a mirror to take the photo, then flip the photo so it's what you'd see if you were able to stick your head between the block and firewall What looks like an oil slick underneath it is actually a shadow created by the camera flash
