New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
We have two minor but annoying problems with our 2-month old T-31. Both have existed from day one and the dealer could offer no remedy during the first service. I could not find quite the same issues from a forum search.
1. Once over about 60kph there is a "rustling" noise from the general dashboard area, like grains of rice or sand falling on a surface. Nothing in the glove box or storage box, and it is not related to fan or aircon settings. Hard to pin down to one area - seems to be coming from across the whole dash. It IS related to road roughness, as it comes on at lower speeds on rougher-surfaced roads. Any ideas to suggest to Nissan service are welcome. The service agent must be deaf as they said they could not hear anything - I'll take them for a drive next time.
2. If started after being parked facing uphill, the fuel gauge can show empty complete with flashing warnings. The only way to fix it is to stop on a flat area, turn the ignition off and re-start. Of course the dealer said they could not reproduce the problem and had never heard of it happening before. Is this a known problem?
Thanks
Phil

Re: New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
Hi Phil,
In relation to your questions, could you answer the following ...
1. Have you had someone listen with their ear very close to the dash, all along it, to see if the noise comes from one particular place ?
2a. How full or empty does the tank have to be for this to happen or does it happen regardless of how much petrol is in the tank ?
2b. Before you parked on the hill, did you finish a long drive or a short one and how long was the Xtrail parked in that position before being started again ?

Re: New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
Thanks Kev,
Answers to your points
1. Yes - you should have seen my wife leaning all over the front of the cabin as we drove along the highway, her ear moving over everywhere! It COULD be coming from the air vent below the windscreen, but it is hard to rule out that it is nothing to do with the vent. Sometimes it does remind me of something like a small piece of paper/tape/leaf caught in a vent - but turning the ventilation off..lo..hi does not change its frequency or tone, so I think not. More like a large hunk of plastic moving at fairly high frequency with a slight squeak - something needing tightening ... maybe.
2a. Now you mention it, I have not seen the fuel gauge problem happen with the tank close to full. More like half or less. But then that could be coincendental (the tank is only full a small fraction of the time!).
2b. We have a steep driveway, and if I leave it on the slope for a "liitle while" after a suburban trip it can happen (I can't remember if it needs a minimum time parked). Now we avoid parking on the slope!

Re: New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
OK Phil,
1. It may be something as you say, a leaf etc, but stuck in the outside grille near the windscreen where the fresh air vent is. Have you checked there with the bonnet up ?
2a & 2b. Nothing seems to come to mind here. I think our T30 model Xtrails had 2 fuel sender units, one each side of the tailshaft hump, one master and one slave. If your T31 has the same, maybe having these swapped might cause the problem you are experiencing. Try asking this question to service (stranger things have happened).

Re: New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
Hi Phil,
Mine is having noise on the rear view mirror and it really depends on the road condition. When I mention this at the service, they can not replicate it. Not sure whether yours is the same.

Re: New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
With regard to the fuel gauge thing,
My T30 is normally parked in front of my house next top the kerb and is on a slope from the driver side to the kerb.
When I start it from this position the fuel gauge will always read lower than it actually is.
It will eventually find the correct level though.
This is pretty normal and was the same in my last car (05 Corolla)
The reason is quite simply that the fuel will always stay level even it the tank is at an angle (Like when parked on a slope)
(Think of a tilted glass of water, the fluid is closer to the base of the glass on the higher side)
It takes a while to correct itself because, as you can imagine when you are driving in suburbia you are stopping and starting and turning a lot the fuel will be sloshing around in the tank. But it will correct itself.
As Kev says, I think there are 2 sensors in the fuel tank but I am pretty sure one is under lower in the tank (I will have a look at the service manual)
Sounds like the fuel gauge is working fine, I would not worry.

Re: New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
Hi,
I have a new T31 (1000km) which has a 'creaking/squeaking' noise apprently coming from the centre of the dash where it meets the windscreen. Sounds like the rubber is flexing against the windscreen or something. Only occurs on some roads such as rough bitumen where it can turn into a continuous squeaky sound - not very loud though. I guess it could be the same problem as Phil.
It is having its free 'service' (at which the service guy told me that they do nothing but fix rattles and wash the car(?)) next week so I will mention it and let you know the outcome.
Cheers

Thanks gazza83
That sounds exactly on the mark. Could well be the reason. Let me know if they fix it at the service.

Re: New T-31: Dash area noise and fuel gauge problem
Hello. Ours had a similar noise, tracked it down to the plastic cover, outside, on the bottom of the windscreen. Even though it really does sound as though it is coming from the dash . Just experiment pushing a match or something similar between the glass and plastic, to stop the vibration of the plastic cover the wipers come out of - against the glass. It fixed our annoying little noise, maybe it is yours too?
