engine noise
Hi Xtrail experts.
I have a 2006 build Xtrail, Dec 06. It has done 40000 ks. Over the past few months I have noticed piston slap on warm up, particularly on 1 cyl . The noise goes when warm after a few Ks. This does not sound right for a car of this low mileage. I am a mech by trade and have not had this problem on any of my previous vehicles. Do I have to worry about loose butterfly screws on this engine. I know if I take it to a dealer they will fob me off by telling me that it is normal. If so why only 1 noisy piston. I have 7 months warranty left so I hope to take it in at a later date.
I hope you can help . Thanks Terry Finch

Re: engine noise
Hi Terry,
Have you checked the gap of the spark plug in cylinder one to see if it's normal?
Am not sure how you identified the noise to be coming from cylinder one as it's usually very hard to tell, bit usually what sounds like an piston slap noise can be associated with loose timing chain tensioner which you also should check.
I don't think it's the butterfly screws as you would have noticed a considerable drop in power.

Re: engine noise
Hi Jalal. Re engine noise, I meant to say the noise comes from a single cylinder not no 1.
The slap I get is from blipping the throttle on a cold engine and is quite pronounced from inside the cab. It seems to be getting worse. I am not using any oil as yet. I guess I will have to wait and see what develops before the warranty runs out. Are there any recalls to check on loose butterfly screws as prevention is better than a cure.
Thanks mate. Terry Finch. Bridgetown WA.

Re: engine noise
Fair enough Terry, I strongly advise that you check all spark plugs, as waiting to see what happens will only make matters worse if there is indeed a fault with the butterfly screws.
There was no recall for these screws, but dealers are aware of them and can do the preventative measure at your cost if requested (refer to the existing thread on this subject)
Excessive oil usage will not be noticeable so early in the game, immediate power loss is what you'll notice and that would mean trouble for sure.
Since your exy is still under warranty, get it checked-out by the dealer and ask them to check the plugs as well as the timing chain tensioner.
