Malfunction indicator light

Driving home from work tonight the malfunction indicator light came on. Googled a bit and found instructions on how to get the code but I can't seem to do it.

Do I have to take it to Nissan service centre to find out or will any mechanic be able to tell me? Any idea of cost?

Car was serviced 2 weeks ago (120,000km service). Ever since it seems to be a bit sluggish and every (roughly) 4th start it sounds rough for a 30 seconds of so and then seems to clear and runs fine. It is also using more oil/water than normal.

Hi Philippa,

Your mechanic would be able to tell what the error code is if he has an ECU reader device.

In the meantime, keep an eye on the temperature needle.

I would suggest that if they serviced it 2 weeks ago then they should do the test themselves for free to determine that they did not install something wrong.

Thats what I think too kev.
Maybe they removed a sensor and never put it back resulting in a MIL light.

Philippa,
Take it back to where you got it serviced and say that the MIL light came on after the service was done, they should look into it straight away.

Re: Malfunction indicator light

Just found the receipt for the service. It was the 120,000 service and was done at Bridgestone Select, Tuggeranong on the 9/9/09. Total cost was $430.00

Will call them this morning and see what they say.

Car is now at the mechanic. He claims it was nothing they did but will take a look and see what is wrong.

I have been googling this morning and reading about the problem with the butterfly screws. Is there any chance this could be the problem?

It's a bit too early to be guessing what the problem is, as it would be helpful to get the error code identified first, but if the car indeed consumes too much oil and water, it's not a good sign and it could mean a number of things all of which are pretty serious when it comes to the engine long term effect.

Mechanical just called - blown head gasket. He quoted $1500 to fix it.

Re: Malfunction indicator light

There you go, as soon as you mentioned coolant loss, I was suspecting something serious and this could be a result of blockage in the radiator due to casting sand (see THESE threads on this topic) and the use of non-genuine Nissan coolant.

Has the car overheated while you were driving it?

Re: Malfunction indicator light

It overheaded once about 2 weeks ago. NRMA came out and had no idea. Has not overheaded since.
