My Dash goes funny every so often!

HI,

I have a 2009 ST.
6 Spd Man
Has 20,000 Km on the clock., but I've had it since new.

In the last 3 weeks, it has started doing some pretty weird stuff.

First off, 3 weeks ago, the cruise control dropped out while driving on the highway at 110km. Entire dash display (Not the lights, only the display) blinked twice, and beeped at me in sync with the flashing, then the whole car just shut down. Nothing. No power steering or anything (Could have been very interesting if on a corner).

The car re-started ok first go. Took it straight into the dealership I brought it from. They plugged their Diagnostics in and told me that there was nothing wrong.

1 Week later. Same thing. This time, when I restarted, the fuel gauge showed empty (Not even one bar) even though i had filled the car up about 1/2 hour previous.. Took it straight into the dealerhip. Diagnostics. Nothing wrong. They replaced the fuel sensors in the tank. Now when the car is fully fuelled, it shows 3/4 and a bit. not full. Dealership says not warranty.

Ok. 4 Days later. Driving along at 60km. Car beeps. Speedometer display displays a line of oooo's across where total km's should be(But only using the lower half of the 8 on digital display to make the o. if that makes sense) Comes back to normal about 10 seconds later. does it every single time the car registers a kilometer.

Into dealership. Diagnostics. Nothin wrong. Take car for test drive. Does not play up (I even have photos of the display of oooo's and they still don't believe me!!!!)

It seems that when the car plays up, and ignition gets turned off, it resets what ever is causing these faults.

My next closest dealership is 4 hours drive away, so i just can't pop down and see them, but i will next time i'm down that way. In the mean time, has anyone else experienced this, or know what i'm talking about?

This is my third x-trail over 9 years, and beleive it or not this is the first problems i've encountered.

Thanking you all for advice in advance

Bryce

Hi Bryce,

That would be interesting if you were driving around a corner. I think the dealer has an obligation to do the right thing here. they should swap your car for a loan car until they fix this problem as it is potentially very dangerous. And as far as the warranty goes, if you have been sold something that doesn't work, then you have every right to not pay a cent for them fixing this within your warranty period. This isn't a case of you being negligent to the car, it sounds like a manufacturing fault. Which dealer did you purchase from?

Re: My Dash goes funny every so often!

Hi Bryce,

I can confirm that I received an email from another T31 owner with a similar problem to yours and it tuned out a loose wiring harness either going to the ECU or the dash display at the back of the dash. It was loose from the factory during assembly. A loose harness will NOT show any faults through the diagnostics device and the dealer should be a bit more pro-active in checking the wiring harnesses rather than totally rely on seeing error codes.

The fuel gauge error is indeed covered by warranty and it has been discussed HERE. The dealer needs to change BOTH sender units (and not just one of them).

Re: My Dash goes funny every so often!

Thanks Jalal.

I did read that thread but I started a new thread as I seemed to have a more indepth problem with my other funny going ons. I'll be having a good look at the wiring myself tonight when I get a chance.

I will also be hitting them up about the tank sender. Yes I know for a fact that they only replaced one as they showed it to me when i collected the car.

Thanks.

When the dial shows small zeros, it normaly means dimming the dash lights normally when you turn the thin knob with the instrument panel on it to the left.
This may mean that a light harness can be loose.

Re: My Dash goes funny every so often!

UPDATE:

I totally pulled my dash apart last night checking all wiring harnesses. I found two connectors that were not totally together directly behind the display. I checked all connectors i could find right throughout the dahs and engine bay.

Will see how this goes and let you know what happens.
