Hi Guys,
I have just received a further clarifying reply from the Spanish company that makes the snorkels saying it is compatible with the petrol engine (i.e. ours) and it has been designed for the RHD models like ours as well.
They sent me this pic of how it is connected from the inside.
The strange think they mentioned though, was that they received "un-confirmed" reports stating that fuel consumption has increased a little for those exys fitted with the snorkel 
I sent back a reply asking them to confirm pricing and also clarify their statement further, as I would have thought that adding a snorkel means increasing "cold" air intake which in turn should improve fuel economy and power.
In the absense of any interest of the local manufacturers to design one for the exy, I think this would be our only option for a snorkel at the moment.

OK Guys,
I have received pricing from Spain for these and it's as follows:
Single order pricing is $1,400 or so (shipped)
Bulk order of 6 or more would see the above price drop to around $850 (shipped)
Expensive? of course. Worth it? it depends where you drive LOL

I don't mean any disrespect to the Spanish company, but I really think it would be cheaper to get one custom-made locally, probably from fiberlass or similar. I would assume any "bodykit" company (eg. www.fibremotive.com.au) would be able to do something like this.
As for the increase in petrol consumption - the existing air intake would be mainly designed with fuel economy in mind. The volume of the resonator box and all associated ducting (diameters, lengths etc) are all contributing factors to fuel economy and also engine performance. Change it and one or both goals are going to be affected.

I agree with you Rich, but finding a local manufacturer that would be interested in designing one for the xtrail is not an easy task.
I have approached 2 different snorkel manufacturers in Australia and none of them was interested.
Seeing the price of the locally made snorkels, I don't think it'll be much cheaper either (but I could be wrong)

Well, I was just saying to Noel last night that Dez posted the pic of the snorkel and disappeared without letting us know any details 
I do suspect it is home-made type, but it does look very nice and professionally done.

You can tell who the most keen are to find out more about this snorkel - everyone that has responded to this thread before Dez has had a chance to!
I agree with Jalal in that it looks like a home-made one, but to a very high standard. The piping looks like standard PVC plumbing/electrical conduit - I'd guess 75-80mm diameter based on the measurement of my (clear) side indicator and that it's close to the same size going by the photos in the other thread...
As for the black trim finish around the hole that the snorkel passes through in the guard - this can be achieved at least 2 ways I know of to such a good quality (again as shown in the photos) - one is by using a pre-made bush/gromet that come in certain sizes - he probably made the hole just the right side to fit the bushing. If it's the same as the ones I'm thinking of (electrical) then they just pop into the hole with abit of pressure (and come out the same way). The other method would be to use cut-to-length rubber bushing which would probably come on a roll and look similar to windscreen washer blades (just the rubber only) but instead of having the washing fins, would just be a "C" shaped channel. It could be siliconed in position from the inside to retain a professional look from the outside.
IMHO the rubber bushing is the better option as it would prevent plastic-on-plastic rattling (snorkel and bushing).
I don't think I need to state the obvious in regards to colour-matching the PVC piping to the car body paint colour...
Looks like there's only a need to drill/screw one or two holes near the top to keep it in place. It also looks like it would be a very close fit/just clear the door and passenger's mirror when the door is opened!
Definitely looking forward to anything that Dez posts up in response!
