I am also interested to see the gains, so we can compare them to the conventional CAI set-up.

Cheers Steve...

we will have to catch up at some stage, as I reckon this may fit on a T31 petrol. It should, however that A pillar angle will be the concern. Wont cut your car up, just have a bit of a look emoticon
Still working on getting out for a drive at some stage this year.... emoticon
No more mods planned...apart from general maintenance and repairs as required. And slotted rotorsemoticon and BFGs....when I have some cash.
Will be a while.
cheers

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Copied from members rides thread....Kev asked (in two questions) after driving through the storms that smashed Brisbane yesterday

quote:

Did ANY water get into the snorkel intake and where did it go ?Maybe being water droplets, the engine burnt it just like some water injection systems ?

To be honest Kev I would say that, regardless of the force of rain, NO water actually gets through the filter.
The base of the filter wasn't wet or damp. No water had collected in the base of the filter box at all.

Any water droplets actually inside the snorkel itself must be small, and in such a limited volume that I couldnt hear or feel any in the "s" bend. ie most of it must exit the snorkel head as advertised, via the slots. I checked immediately after pulling out of the rain into the garage, and again an hour later.
And again this morning before leaving work.

I did try an airtek snorkel head off a patrol at work today, perfect fit and looks better due to the fact it has a bug grill on the front. Bigger input area as well. When I pulled it off the Patrol , a shedload of small inseccts were trapped in the drainage holes, so this tells me the snorkel heads do act "as advertised"

Pic attached....steam powered mobile so apologise for the poor quality

We'll show you when we take you out water skiing, just got to wait for Readymix to drop off the components for your skis....

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

I have a question regarding dyno-ing of snorkels, cos I am tossing up the option of doing this. ie between stock intake/ snorkel/ CAI/ short ram

If the ram air effect is critical to the power increases stated by manufacturers, how is this simulated on a Dyno? Put a fan in the intake and blow it at speeds to reflect the cars simulated KM per hour? Up to 110kmph or greater?

I use industrial fans to simulate airflow over condensers when doing car aircons, so its not completely infeasible. (not to highway speeds though..just a mass of moving air)

However, I cant really see a benefit of doing this is NO air is rammed into the snorkel head emoticon
Any ideas on how it is done....
On road dyno via a diagnostic tool?

Cheers,
Dave

I have emailed several Dyno and snorkel manufacturers, no reply as yet.
Just hoping someone knows, or knows "someone who knows"

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Dave,

I think Airflow will be the best people to ask this question as the information of dynoing a car fitted with a snorkel is posted on their website:

quote:

When the Airflow counts

During the past 18 months, Gibson RM have undertaken a review of all of their product lines and have committed to a substantial redesign and testing regime which has resulted in more efficient and aesthetically appealing snorkels for a wide range of 4WD vehicles.
The program is ongoing and includes re-developing some older models and development of new models for the local Australian market and for overseas markets.

AIRFLOW have released a snorkel for the new 200 series Landcruiser. Extensive testing involved creating an airflow onto the snorkel whilst the vehicle was on a dyno. The dyno test simulated driving speeds up to 145 Klms/hr and a variable speed centrifugal fan created airflow at comparable speeds. The test results showed increased torque and power up to speeds of 95 Klms/hr, after which the performance leveled off. An additional test was to monitor the fuel economy on a long trip with a vehicle carrying 6 passengers and towing a campervan. This test indicated an improvement of approximately 8% in fuel consumption.

To validate the above information you can also contact the dyno place we used for the T31 diesel and petrol dyno runs as these guys are experts in this field and would know how to measure the gain from a snorkel (company details are posted in the Hi-Tech T31 diesel thread...just click on the company logo)

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Cheers for that Jalal,

there are a couple of reputable 4x4 dyno places in Brisbane I have emailed, and according to posts in other forums (from customers) they "have dyno tested vehicles both before and after snorkel installation".

The posts did not state "forced induction" of the snorkel head, but obviously a more detailed correspondence, and visit to some workshops, is required.

I had missed that write up on the Gibson website (or forgotten it, most likely emoticon )

Thanks for the link, I will email and see if they have, or know of, a reputable dyno shop in Brisbane, capable "ramming some air in" emoticon

Cheers

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Ok, this is going to be a tad "off-topic" however...

there are no Dyno facilities in south east QLD capable of "introducing an airflow into or over a vehicle" whilst Dyno testing.
I was informed that QLD University of Technology is the only place that does wind tunnel testing, but considering buyin a pie and coke at their caffeteria nearly bankrupted me in 1993...I wont bother.

No-one can dyno a CAI, or snorkel set up at all, because no one can "induce mass air at speed into an intake."
I was told the next best option was a GTech and doing runs on the road, while changing intake designs, but this is beyong my scope at the moment.
There is a horsepower setting, and percentage load setting on the scanguage, but I dont trust these.

I am going to be limited to logging my fuel consumption as L per 100km as indicated by Scanguage, as well as engine temps, intake air temps, coolant temps and then a "general butt dyno" statement.
I already have 3 tanks worth of data, and am aiming for a 5 tank/ 2000km round up of figures.
I can do that in "members rides" if aplicable.

Still absolutely stoked with the snorkel though, and may be installing one for a guy at work in next few weeks.

Back on topic.... emoticon
Cheers
