Looks a treat Mat well done. Not sure if I'll get one as it will hide the nice shiny new exhaust I got installed recently emoticon
I wonder if I can get it in stainless LOL. I better be careful else I may be developing a chrome like fetish like Jalal cept for stainless instead. Gotta be weary of weight I know. I can dream though.

Re: T30 bash plate

looks good Mat,
I don't know if I would go to the trouble of spraying it though.
My aluminium bash plate paid for itself on its first outing. It was the last trip to the Blackheath discovery trail.
When I got home, took the plate off and a bit of panel beating and all straight now.

Its got a hundred scratches on it.

Looks good mate. You just made me go to the garage and check, it's 3mm (2.9mm to be exact) mate, am not sure what you have used to measure it but it is no way 1.4mm in thickness.

Am not sure what you have used to measure it but it is no way 2.9mm in thickness.

A few simple calculations will prove this unless if you want to also claim it weighs 11kg.

The density of steel as about 7850kg/m3.
If we calculate the area of the bash plate and multiply it by the density of the steel we will come up with the weight of the bash plate.
The dimensions are approximate as it is not possible to get an exact measurent as the steel is not flat with square sides.
98cm x 57cm is what i come up with. Then i take 10% off surface area due to various cutouts.
So for
2.9mm = ((((98 x 57) x 0.9) x 0.29)/1000) x 7.8
           = 11.37 kg

2.9mm = ((((98 x 57) x 0.9) x 0.14)/1000) x 7.8
           = 5.49 kg

This is simple maths and the bash plate does not weigh 11kg it is around 5kg.
Like i said my trade covers some of this stuff so i know how to measure and calculate these things, maths is provided for anyone to check themselves.

Should we now agree that it is 1.4mm.

I don't understand why you feel the need to advertise 3mm as i feel that 1.4mm is adequate for the job and am happy with that anyway. The plate is obviously pressed from a sheet of steel and it would be nearly impossibly to press it out of 3mm anyway.

Re: T30 bash plate

Mat,

We're going around in circles it seems on this issue. I think you missed my reply where I said:

quote:

In any case, the the thickness of this T30 bash plate is more than enough to withstand the toughest of hits as you would soon experience.

The selling point of the bash plate is not its thickness, rather its ability to withstand hits in an off-road situation as experienced by more than one member with this particular bash plate, but more importantly, its ability to protect your exy. The dollar value of the bash plate when it is sold was NOT based on thickness and weight if that is what you're trying to get at.

If this issue is so important to you, I will remove any reference to its thickness from the shop page and be done with it.

After selling over a 100 of these to many happy xtrailers in Australia and around the world, you're the first to go into scientific testing of its thickness and weight LOL emoticon

Re: T30 bash plate

I only did this to prove my point that i can measure these things correctly.

I do agree it's ability to withstand hits in an off-road situation and its ability to protect your exy.

I started off a reply in this post with the report on putting the bash plate on my car and just stated that it wasn't 3mm thick. I was happy with this. There was no need to be defensive and try to recorrect me that it is 3mm when it is clearly not.
I hate it when people try to correct you when they don't know what their talking about.

I feel that this is important to know on this thread as other X-Trail owners may wish to have a challenge and make their own and knowing that it is only 1.4mm and not 3mm makes a huge difference in trying to bend one out of sheet steel yourself if one is up for the challenge.
Mat.
