DAMN IT!!!!
I was hoping to convert my Series-2 dash and switches to a nice Blue Glow but im guessing there is an orange filter on mine also
Don't give-up just yet!
I thought so too about the Series II, until I stumbled across a very complicated LED colour change process for series II which will enable you guys to change them to any of the following colours (green, blue, red and yellow)
I will post the details tonight, as I don't have it handy here with me now.
For Series I owners, we're stuck with those damn filters we have, so we can't do anything besides what I have already done sorry.

Re: LEDs Colour Change Project
OK Series II owners,
Here is a detailed process on how you can change the colour of your dials to 5 different colours using LED that go directly onto the electronic board of your dash dials.
It is FAR from being easy and it is in fact a bit risky, but if you're prepared to take the risk, the results could be amazing!
The whole mod described in THIS slideshow.
Would I do this mod if I had a Series II, you bet!!

Re: LEDs Colour Change Project
Series II does not have filters in the cluster (unlike Series I) and apart from three small globes which you can see in pic 3. The rest are LEDs soldered to the board.
Once these LEDs are changed to different colours, you get the final desired result.
The risk in doing this mod, is not in the soldering process (which is rather straight forward) but in removing the needles from their place. I have tried that on Series I and the needles are VERY fragile, so any wrong move and you can say good-bye to the needle and would have to get a replacement. That is why I said this mod is complicated.

Re: LEDs Colour Change Project
This is exactly what I used Andrew if you read my experiment on page 1 of this thread
Toys 'R Us have it.
I tested all colours and only the bright red worked with the series I.

Re: LEDs Colour Change Project
What do you mean by "written review"?
This is all the info. that I have and you need to buy replacements LED's through eBay for this mod.
I have a set of 10 blue LEDs which I bought thinking they will fit my series I, so anyone is welcome to score these from me if they wish to do this mod. Cost me $30
The specs of the LED as follows:
SMD-Chip-LED, ultra blue, typ:125mcd
Tim: Be VERY careful with the needles!

do you know if they are an exact replacement.. ie same pin layout and spacing? if so i might take these off your hands...
They have been sold to me by a company in Germany specifically for the Series II X-Trail.
Here is how the look like compared to the series I standard dash bulb (if you can see them that is) They're so tiny!
quote: Jalal, i work with all sorts of technical instruments (some of which are worth more than an xtrail!!) on a daily basis pulling them apart and whatnot so it shouldnt be too difficult.. i have careful hands!
That's good to know. I was only trying to warn you, as I'm from an electronics background too, but removing those fiddly needles has nothing to do with my electronics experience LOL
quote: all i really need to know is if i can get exact replacement leds and also how to actually get to the instrument cluster.. does the shroud around the cluster simply clip off - like everything else inside the car? or do i need to unscrew half the dash? :S
I will email you the section from the service manual which describes the removal of the cluster for series II (I think it is actually posted here somewhere on the forum)
Let us know how you go, cause this is really an interesting mod, please take photos of the whole process too.
