T31 Gas Bonnet Struts

HI all;
I bought struts from Jalal marked 03-07 models. I fitted them to my 02 Exy, and took them off when trading in on the 09. They will fit; you just need to use the left side strut on the left top hinge bolt [closest to the front edge]; but turned around 180 degrees. The lower end has to be bolted down to the headlight holddown bracket forward of the old position. A longer bolt may be necessary. I may need to fit a spring washer, as there has been a little movement on one side, at the bonnet.
It will clear the Alutec strut.
I have taken heaps of photos but am not proficient at this.

Clem,

Are you saying that you managed to have the T30 bonnet gas struts fit your T31 bonnet?

This is interesting indeed and I would like to see that.

Please email me pics of them fitted and I will post them here.

How's the opening and closing operation? Is it smooth as the T30 or requires a push to open in full?

Jalal.
It has a smoother action with no sudden lift urges, that my 02 had at the end of its lift.
Will send photos and you can sort them.

Dont need to be much longer, and fit a washer over the headlight plastic bracket so it doesnt split.

Re: T31 Gas Bonnet Struts

OK, here are the pics of the T30 bonnet gas struts fitted to Clem's T31 exy:

Having seen the pics Clem, I don't think it's safe to fit the struts the way you did for 2 reasons:

1. The plastic mounting point of the headlight is not strong enough to take all that pressure and it will crack with time, even with the a spring washer fitted.

2. The top mounting bracket is not deigned to be mounted the way you have done, because it will simply swivel and turn after a number of opening and closing operations. It needs to be supported by the edge of the bonnet bracket, so it doesn't move at all.

If that bracket moves out of alignment, there is a very high risk of the bonnet gas strut snapping from its place which may cause injury to you or great damage to the bonnet.

Re: T31 Gas Bonnet Struts

Hi Jalal

On Tuesday I'll be taking the exy in to one of my customers "gas strut" shop (Tingalpa) to see if they can make a set of bonnet struts for our T31.

I'll let you know of the outcome.

No worries Stephen, let me know what happens and if successful we can strike a deal with them.

The design shouldn't be much different to what Clem has displayed above and to the existing T30 bonnet struts, the only couple of differences need to be made at the top mounting bracket and the strut itself needs to be made shorter so it can attach to a solid bolt position on the fender side.

Hi Clem (or any other T31 xtrail owner)

Can you please measure the distance between nut of the bonnet (centre) and the raised edge as shown in the pic below?
