Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
Same product Dave. I will do more testing when I get the samples.
The issues Mike is reporting have not been reported by any other user of this mirror, so it could well be the case of a defective mirror/sensor which Mike would need to replace under warranty.

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
frustrating as it is... I will get it resolved... I am going the UK route for help... may cost me more for shipping this mirror, but I am hoping it will be an exchange.
Update.... UK will have nothing to do with me... seperate business unit... so it's back to the USA for help... this is not going to be pretty.....

Finally got in contact with US supplier... the mirror is going back and being replaced with a new one. I hope this does not take forever... kinda starting to like what I got... but if it is not working the way it suppose to do... then off ya go....

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
After a few more emails to the supplier, it appears that the mirror I have functions as to spec. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO here is my final take on it.
The dim works like a lightswitch... it's either ON dim or OFF dim. (I was hoping a gradual dim like the factory installed mirrors)
ON Dim is activated by any light source that is behind you... car.. street lights.. neon lights... If it shines a bright light, the mirror goes to dim. At first I found it annoying but I finally adapted to it.
Driving in the city... if the street lights are bright... it will not go to dim... but as soon as you go to a semi lite street, the mirror may go to dim if there is a light source behind you. The reason I say may... there is a sensor in the front of the mirror that detects if it's dark outside or dark foggy day or sunny or bright with street lights. Depending on the light outside the mirror may go to dim. Again... I found it annoying but I got use to it...
The backseat middle headrest have to go, if you want the mirror to work. The direct line of sight to the back window is blocked for the sensor to work. OR.... what I did, I turn the mirror upside down and made the sensor look over the middle headrest and the mirror works the way it should.
Over all, it has it's quircks... but for the purpose it is doing for me, it is good. I realize that any auto-dimming mirror wll be a challenge for the X-trail with the middle backseat headrest, that will the be the show stopper, so being as portable as it is, I like it.
Until Gentex or CIPA can peak over the middle headrest or provide a mirror that attaches to the roof, Alphamirror is ask good as it gets.
Now Jalal, is suppose to get some in and he will give his opinion when has concluded his research.

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
Hi Guys,
AlphaMirror samples have been received. Testing will commence tonight.
My exy has a middle head-rest too in the back seat since I have upgraded my seats to the Series II Ti Luxury, so will test with and without the head-rest as Mike reported and will tell you if I notice any difference.
I will report back as soon as testing is completed.
P.S. I will test one of them on the Corolla as well

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
OK, The Corolla test using the orange auto-dimming mirror has passed with flying colours, in fact I fell in love with this mirror after this test drive of tonight
The first big difference and advantage I noticed is the wider view this mirror provides compared to the factory one (in both cars, the exy and the Corolla) which is a bonus by itself.
Out on the main road near my place and as soon as a car was driving behind me, the mirror went into dimming mode (like an on switch operation....i.e. not gradual dimming) as soon as I gained distance away from the car following me of approx. 200-300 meters the dimming switched off and the mirror returned to normal operation mode. As soon as another car pulled in behind me it dimmed straight away.
In fact it dims with any type of headlights following you (low beam).
I drove in a dark street that has street lights and even parked with the street light in the view of the rear mirror, but the mirror didn't dim, I drove out again to suburban street that had shops, window displays...etc and the mirror didn't sense any of the street lights to go into dim mode.
The Corolla has a middle rear head-rest and it didn't impact the operation of the mirror at all. The head-rest does sit lower than the xtrail one though, so I'll keep that in mind when I test the exy tomorrow.
Also, the dark window tining I have on the Corolla (and the xtrail) which is 20% did NOT impact on the operation of the mirror sensor at all.
It was nice seeing the headlights of the cars following in that orange colour
The mirror fits perfectly well in place and it is very secure. It is very light too so it won't cause problems to the factory mirror it is clipped on. I noticed no vibration of the mirror only slightly when the car is idling at the lights, but I think even the factory mirror vibrates a bit like that as well.

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
OK Guys,
The x-trail test with clip-on dimming mirror was conducted tonight and I can confirm that the middle head-rest for the Series II T30 models will definitely be in the way of view of the sensor and it will not dim unless this head-rest is removed.
It is not a problem for the T31 xtrails were this middle head-rest sits much lower than the Series II T30 models.
As soon as I removed the head-rest, the mirror started to operate normally as it should and again, I have NOT noticed it to dim due to street lights.

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
For those that are interested... the headrest is not a show stopper... I left mine in and flipped the mirror upside down... (you know.. like ozland.... ) anyway... having the sensor another 10 or so cm higher lets the sensor peak over the headrest and do it's job...

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
Thanks Mike, I haven't tried flipping the mirror upside down yet and will do so tonight.
