Leather Care
Hello All
Did a searh on the forums and couldn't find a post on leather care. To all you fellow xtrailers out there with older Ti-L how is your leather going. What, if anything, do you use to clean, condition and look after your leather.
Thanks
Matt

Re: Leather Care
Hello Matt
Yes, the leather trim on the Ti-L is very hard wearing and only requires a vacuum along with the rest of the car. I use a foam cleaner (in an aerosol can) to bring up the finish of the leather and it looks like brand new. The leather upholstery seems to be a thicker, coarser hide than you would find in a luxury vehicle.

Re: Leather Care
I use the Armor All leather protectant spray and for small and quick cleans the Armor All wipes.
The spray gives a beautiful new and soft finish and also adds that new leather smell.
Highly recommended.

Re: Leather Care
The same type of wipes are also available for leather from the car section at K-mart.

Re: Leather Care
armor all stops things from breathing and in fact you bake the surface you use it on and over a few years it will crack when touched.
I wrecked a torana interior using that stuff after 4 years but it comes down to personal choice and preference.

Re: Leather Care
digging up an old topic again.
when we recently bought some new leather couches at home we got given some "Leather master" cleaner and protection cremes in a box with sponges, polish cloths and ink remover.
Reading the manual - the cleaner foams up on the sponge and cleans the leather, after you have cleaned you wait 30 or so mins and then use the protector to protect and soften the leather.
They gave us 2 lots of these so i nabbed one to try on the x-trail to clean all the freddo frogs off the back seat and hopefully protect and soften the seats.
Just wondering if anyone has tried this product on their leather seats, and if the leather is "Aniline" or "Pigmented"?
I tried the wipes on my T30 Ti-L but wasn't that impressed really, but it was summer at the time and i might not have spent as much time as i should have...

Re: Leather Care
As far as leather lounges go, "Leather master" is an excellent choice but like all leather cleaners go, it needs to be used on a regular basis right from the start. It is no use waiting till the leather starts to fade and crack. The protection cream feeds the leather and keeps it supple. Leather is a natural product and will dry out unless it is looked after but having said that, it will outlast fabric every time with a little care.
The cleaner, well, it cleans. Think of all the sweat, grease and dirt we leave on the seat all the time, in particular when it is hot.
Use a product designed for the purpose. Saddle soap was never designed for leather upholstery, nor was a cleaner for vinyl designed for leather.
Wipe, not scrub the surface.
With the black seats, pen marks should not be a problem but if the kids have a go at the seats, then there are special products for this as well. The word is “do not panic, get the correct product” (e.g. Leather Master Ink Away). If you use the normal cleaner it will clean some of the ink but then sets the rest and it will not come off.
Of course there are many other quality cleaners and protection creams on the market and price can be a good indicator of their quality as it is with many things. A supermarket product at a quarter of the price may well do more harm than good.
Not sure if our seats are Aniline or Pigmented but would think the latter.
“Aniline leathers - Aniline leathers are those coloured solely by aniline dyes. These transparent dyes leave the actual surface grain and such natural markings as wrinkles, bites and scars visible. Aniline leathers are the most natural and 'naked' and are therefore favoured by leather lovers and purists the world over. No two aniline leathers are identical; each hide has its own characteristics. Aniline leathers are highly prized both for their luxurious softness and rich colour. Because Aniline dyes do not coat the surface of the leather, they do leave it somewhat less protected than other dyes and treatments, As a result Aniline leathers are fairly vulnerable to spills and stains.”
“Protected leathers or Pigmented leathers - Protected leathers or Pigmented leathers are aniline dyed hides that have a pigmented topcoat. The topcoat increases the leather's durability and colour consistency, but also increases the stiffness a bit. People who like their leather furniture uniform and perfect as well as people who want more protection will enjoy this type of leather.”
In a past life I spent a few years selling leather lounges.
