posticon WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Hi Guys,

Keep an eye on the corners of the chrome number plate finisher on the tailgate of your T31 exy, as it has been reported that the screws holding it in place are rusting away and causing this rust to spread to the metal surface of the tailgate:

If found report it immediately to your dealer as this is covered by warranty.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Thanks for the advise Jalal I will keep an eye on it.

I have also found an area underneath at the back of the rear wheel arch that likes to collect mud, dirt and rocks it is sure to suffer from rot in the years to come. I clean it out diligently and always find mud and pebbles in there.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

This forum is great. Thanks for the warning. Rust is the main problem over here because of wet climate and massive use of salt on the roads at wintertime to keep the surface ice free.

All X-Trails in Norway are delivered with extra anti-rust protection from dealer when new. The whole underbody is sprayed with a protective oil-based layer. They use "Tectyl" from Valvoline Oil.

But the rust you are mentioning is not covered by this protection, so I'll keep an eye on it. Our X-Trail has a 12-year-warranty against rust, so the dealer will probably fix this for me.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

I noticed recently when I took my exy back for her annual rust proof check up ,this was a area that they were having a very close look at and I was surprised that they put the exy on the hoist and resprayed parts under the car.

Still can not get the smell out of the car after a week lol.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jalal.

Do you know of any other potential areas we should keep an eye on?

posticon Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

I have the rust problem on the tailgate finisher and I am extremely disappointed that I have rust issues to worry about on a car thats not even been on the road for four months yet - has always been garaged and never been near salt spray.

On closer inspection the problem seems to be caused by the poor fit of the finisher. There is a slight gap between the finisher and the body ( which is what I would assume is the correct fit )except on the left hand corner where the finisher seems to be pulled hard down onto the paint and it is at this point the rust is present.

I initially thought I was buying value for money but now I'm starting to think cheap and nasty instead. Very disappointing.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Glenn,

Sorry to hear that mate and you better claim that under warranty pretty quick.

I believe the rust is coming from the screws holding this finisher in place, so when then dealer takes it off to have a look, pay attention to the screws and if they're rusty ask them to apply some sort of anti-rust agent on the screws when they fix the problem.

Do NOT accept a touch-up solution by the dealer. This rust spot has to be professionally fixed and the entire tailgate might have to be re-sprayed.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

When I get a spare hour I'm going to remove the internal cover of the tailgate and check if the rust has started on the chrome finisher bolts.
My service is only 2000k's away, so this way they can address it if it has started to rust before it comes through the tailgate.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Checked my tail gate tonight and all looked like new, bolts are zinc plated and have rubber washers to seal the hole, one area of concern was the bottom of the tailgate where the drain holes are (inside), there was 2 small rust stains that may have been from shavings when the spoiler was fitted, left the trim off and will spray it with some rust proofing when time permits.
