Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

This is quite scary emoticon I just got my xtrail for nearly a month. It was built in Jan 09, after I read this thread I checked the finisher but found no sign of rust yet (just outside though). Now another other problem come up with the high mounted brake light. I think I just have to call the Nissan service people, explain these problems and ask them to check them this Monday. I think Nissan should have a recall regarding to the chrome finisher.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Spoke to my local Nissan dealer today about this. They said that they had been officially notified by Nissan about leaking tail light but not about the rusting screws behind the chrome cover. I'm taking the car in on Friday to see if they can find out what's causing the gearbox problems and they said they'd have a look at both of these while they had the car.

Good stuff Paul, but did they ask you how did you know about the leaking brake light problem? emoticon

No, they didn't ask. I just said that I'd heard there was a possible problem and she admitted that they'd been notified by Nissan about this.

It's good to try and keep them on their toes!

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

I rang my nissan dealer today, as plawton mentioned, they know about the mounted brake light problem but not about the chrome finisher's rust problem. I told them that I'm a member of the Xtrail owner club so I'm always well informed about the Xtrail issues emoticon He was impressed emoticon Anyway, I bring the car back sometimes this week so they could check both mounted brake light and chrome finisher. Oh, he also said that the mounted brake light is just a bulletin, Nissan hasn't issued an official recall yet.

That is correct. It is not a recall and they wll treat it on case by case basis as reported by customers.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Well, I pulled the chrome bit off the car this arvo to have a peek. There's only 4 bolts, the other is a fastener (the white plastic type). No rust there, and the bolts seem to be coated or stainless, not really the type to rust!

Maybe there were different bolt types used at different times? Mine was a late 2007 model.

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

I had my car checked at Nissan dealer this morning. They did the water pressure test on the mounted brake light and said no sign of leaking yet but they still order the new part for it, I will bring the car back again next week for them to fix it. They found no rust with the chrome finisher area.

Cheers

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Just pulled off the inner back door for my own inspection and it looks like brand new behind there, no signs of the bolts rusting but there again I did get the rust proofing done at the dealers and it looks like it is doing a great job.

Regards Scot

Re: WARNING: T31 Potential Rust Spot

Good stuff. Now that you know how easy it is to inspect, you can keep an eye on it and check these screws every now and then.

From the photos I have seen of this finisher, there seems to be a rubber seal on the edge of it to prevent it from touching the paint of the tailgate from the outside, so it is quite possible that the rust experienced by some xtrailers is linked to this rubber seal either falling off somehow or that it was not correctly fitted during assembly at the factory.
