Re: UHF CB radios

Good luck with the trip, you lucky B********.

As for UHF channels, here are my tips;

Channel 18 is often used by the grey nomads (caravanners) and is a great source of general chat. They will often have their channel on the back of their caravan or fourbie, but 18 is the accepted channel.

Channel 40 is for truckies and other highway users. This is the best source of information, including road and traffic conditions, radar locations (often referred to as 'flash for cash') and whether there are any police on the roads (often referred to as 'dog box', 'bluey' or more colourful terms if they have a truckie pulled over) Be warned that the language on this channel can be colourful and very offensive, but it is also a great way to pass the time.

If you wish to join in, use the term, 'breaker' and they will call you up. You can also use this to see how far you can transmit, but asking for their locations. Some users think they run the world and wont give you any time of day, but others will be in for a long chat.

It would also pay to look on the various UHF radio sites to work out what repeater stations are in the area you will be driving. By using the repeaters, you will be able to transmit much further, but this channel is only for calling up mates and then moving to an unused channel. It is also used to call for help. Most outback police stations monitor channel 40 and also the repeater channel, so it would be a good idea to find this info out. Send me a pm with your route and I will find out for you.

Again, have a great trip.

Re: UHF CB radios

Nick,

Are you looking for a CB or a UHF unit ???

Also be mindful of the aerial you get for your unit, a 3db will give excellent flat coverage, whilst a 9db will give better coverage in hilly areas. Best to aim for the 6db, but some can cover more frequency with a sliding piece.

I have the GME4400 and it nevers misses a beat. I have 40 channels as well as 20 which I can program myself. The kids love listening to the police chat in some areasw, but I'd rather forget about work when I'm not there. emoticon

Info can be found here: GME LINK

Nick, check the last reply on page 1 of this thread giving a link to a company that sells the Uniden model you're after and more. Their prices are pretty good.

Re: UHF CB radios

Hmmm... Only a newbie here, but a radio ham, and would like to correct the info regarding 3, 6, and 9db antennas. emoticon

Please refer to this link. (best I've come across lately) to see the difference in coverage...

I use a 3db ground-independent, because I only want to hear (or talk to) folks nearby. emoticon

OTOH, you will see the big 6 and 9db antennas out west in the flat country, where there are few hills and long distance coverage is very important. I have sen a 12 db antenna on an outback ute, but he'd be in trouble going under a bridge... emoticon

Re: UHF CB radios

I removed the flip down pocket just above the climate control dials and installed my UH095 in there. I screwed the units bracket to a hidden plastic strip which puts the radio pretty much in the right spot. The mic sits in the glove box and i plug it in as required.
