Re: UHF CB radios
I recently bought the new GME 3100 and ADI spring mounted, elevated feed antenna.
I have only had Uniden in the past, but the new GME is so small, and can be flipped to mount either way.
The antenna is black, has a spring base (a must for diesel cars) elevated feed and comes with a 6.5 and 3db antenna (for around the city, or hilly areas).
See how small it is? it fits nicely down there, or you could mount it in that pocket at the top of the centre console, in front of the glove box etc.
Range is pretty good too.
Bob - with handhelds - i have used the Uniden 2W unit and the GME 2 W unit. The Uniden was simple to use and quite good on the battery. The GME outperformed the Uniden and had a removable antenna, and i think you can get a car kit for them now too, so you can use it in and out of the car (keeping it charged and maybe a external antenna).

Re: UHF CB radios
Hi guys,
Another one for the GME 3100, it's a compact unit which i only mount on the side of the transmission tunnel with velcro patches. Antenna base is mounted on nudge bar with cable covered in plastic flexible conduit through engine bay. It runs between battery and headlight, then around passanger wall tied with cable ties. The rubber gromet was removed through firewall and cable comes inside at the back of glovebox. I tucked it under the carpet and fed under centre plastic console to between passanger seat and centre storage box, its hidden quite nicely. Power is taken from cigarette lighter due to non permanent mounting.
The antenna is a GME ground independant with elevated feed and 4.5 dB, it stands at around 950mm tall and tip sits about 75mm above roof line. The 4.5 is a good compromise between 3 and 6 dB for use in flat and hilly terrain. I managed to get the GME unit, antenna and 63mm bracket for $380 at the recent leisurefest show at Sandown in Melbourne, saved around $70 for the package from retailers and online stores.

Re: UHF CB radios
Thats a pretty good price Johnsey, i think i paid $360 just for the unit and about $70 for the springbase with elevated feed and 2 antennas. That was from Transceiver Services on main North Road, Pooraka SA. Good thing about them is not only does the guy know his radios and he will individually inspect and tune everyone before it goes out the door, he will beat any advertised price. He will also only sell what he knows works - you notice the lack of "big white broom sticks" in there!
The 3100 has been working a treat. I especially like how you can easily exclude channels from the scanner on the fly, handy in Adelaide as we have a problem with people dropping carriers or dribbling incessantly. Its display is orange, matching the T31's other lights.
I get pretty good range with the 6db but have found the 3db really good in close quarters, ie in town or in hilly areas. Ill bet the 4.5 is a good option, good compromise.
I have a pile of spare UHF and AM antennas left over from past adventures, i might whack them on the "For Sale" section in case anyone is looking for one.

So Andrew, does this mean that you get better reception from a 3db antenna in hilly areas rather than using a higher gain 6db antenna ?
I'm still trying to learn all about this antenna stuff with UHF radios.

Re: UHF CB radios
The lower the gain (3 or 4db) the better for hilly areas. Higher db (5-9db) is better for the flat areas.
