posticon Head lights and Fog Lights Modifications & Upgrades

Don't get me wrong I love my brave X-Trail, but the headlights are far from impressive. I even installed 90/100 watt which had little effect apart from lighting the first 40 metres brighter. The beam fails to light up much in front. I suggest it may be the reflective design? Has anyone come up with a solution apart from spoties which I already have??

Also what is the bubble on top of each head lamp?

Regards

Spoon

Did this cause any problems?

I once installed the brighter lights in another car and it made the headlights turn off after an extended time on high beam.

It was something to do with oo much current drain through the relay.

Hi embi,

No melt down problems at all, before installing 90/100 I spoke with the Nissan Service manager in Darwin (Kerry Nissan) and he assured me the original switch and relay will handle it. I must admit it worries me bit for the reasons you outlined plus the chance it may overload the switch (big $)and cause a melt down. But 10 months on no probs. Be warned though that oncoming town traffic are not impresed, I cop a few flash's suggesting its to bright. Had dealer check allignment all okay. I am about to take them out and put originals back in, as I have just moved to the big smoke of Alice Springs.

I put blue LED bulbs in the park light spot and X-Trail looks KOOOOL!!!!

Regards

Re: Head lights equal power of 2 candles

I have tried a couple of different types of headlight globes - although not in my X-Trail, but in my previous car - '99 Pulsar. One set (around $60/pr) only lasted a few months before one of the elements blew (and then two weeks later the other one blew!). The other pair I got were from a "group buy" with the pulsar club, and they were excellent, with much whiter light output, and brighter, too. I was going to swap them over to the X-Trail when I got it, but then I forgot all about it when the time came to sell the Pulsar.

Big spotties are good (especially ones with something like 730,000 candle-power!), but if you're just after better low-beam, then replacement globes would be the way to go. If you want, I'll chase down the brand and/or model of the ones we got in the pulsar group buy... I do believe they were sourced from o/s, so getting them again may be abit difficult... Anything more than "just the headlights" turned on is considered "high-beam" - even foglights or smaller spotlights (eg: factory ones in the front bumpers).

As for the blue LED parking globes - I've seen them before (had some in my Pulsar, too), but they didn't last long (half the LED's stopped working after a very short amount of time) and in the city, they're too easily noticed by the police... Although I haven't once seen an X-Trail pulled over because of the standard blue parking light lenses?!?!

Hi Basshead,

Thanks for the offer, but I have the higher watt globes in and I don't believe they offer much apart from bright up close, even of high. I really think it is because of the reflective design of the light itself? But thanx for the offer.

Your spotties look like they would light up the moon!!!!lol

Cheers

I'm still looking for the globes I had in my pulsar, but in the meantime, check this site out:

http://www.blowoff.com.au/

Seems to be cheaper than Repco and other car accessory stores...

Someone on the pulsar forums mentioned that the "secure" padlock doesn't appear at the bottom of the page in Internet Explorer when you order on their site, so just be aware of that if you're worried about someone stealing your CC details...

Maybe try COD if it's available?

I haven't looked at the site yet...

Hi Richi,

Great site and excellent prices!

Can you guys tell me what type of globe we have on our X-Trails (i.e. H1, H2 or H3 etc.)? Sorry this may sound like a silly question, but I always get confused with the globe types and the owners manual doesn't mention that as well (except to say they're 55watt lights (I think).

Re: Head lights equal power of 2 candles

I'm 95% sure they would be "H4" - most new cars these days are H4 I believe... My pulsar was H4 and I think even my '85 corolla hatch was also H4... but I never changed the globes in that...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

My manual is in the garage so I can't check to see if it says "H4" in the replacement globe section (probably @ the back of the book somewhere in the specifications section?!).

Re: Head lights equal power of 2 candles

Richi,

Can I take your word for it that it's H4? I want to buy Philips BlueVision H4 lights through the web site you mentioned or from autobarn (which is $8 dearer, but I don't have to wait for them to come in the mail and risk breakage in transit)

I checked the owners manual and it doesn't mention what type of light bubls they're, just the wattage.

Guys: Any comments?

PS> The Philips bulevision light bubls come with 2 complimentary blue parking light bulbs that can be fitted to make everything look nice.

Hi Jalal,

Just returned from my shed with the bulbs original box. They are definately H4...Suggestion: if your putting the bluevision bulbs in you may consider also changing the lower driving light globes to bluevision also for the over all effect.

Cheers

Spoon
