Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification
Hey guys,
I found an electrician who is prepared to do the mod. to my tail lights and I've booked my car in with him for Saturday week.
He said it would cost around $80 (including lamps, lamp holders and labour)
This would be an extension to the existing tail/brake lights at the top.
Can't wait to have this mod. done.
Will keep you posted.

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification
Thanks for that, explains something for me...
Just ordered the genuine driving light switch to go with my Narva spots, and my dealer gave me the fog light switch (25370-V5500) - but the invoice does say "switch assy - driving". I was trying to work out why it had two sets of contacts - didn't think of front and rear fogs!! Ta.

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification
Hi guys...
Just a quick reminder, it is against ADR to have more than 3 brake lights....that includes spoiler....

I don't think that by adding extra safety features to warn other drivers of your barking intentions constitues braking the regulations. It's just not logical.
In any case I would have 3 after the mod. is done (one on the left, one on the right and the high mount stop light)
If I decide to get the spoiler later, I might look at the option of having a stop light on it too, but would remove the high mount one, not in fear of braking the regulations, but because the car would more look like a landing plane from behind

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification
maximum of 3 brake lights???
What about trucks and maybe some 4WD's that have 5 or more?
I reckon there's 10 times more vehicles on the road with non-working brake lights than there would be with more than 3 brake lights!

Richi,
Do you know what I do when I see a car with no brake lights in front of me (which really pisses me off)?
As soon as we get to a set of lights, I get down and knock on their drivers side window and tell them about it and if they give me that stupid look, I tell them I've got some spare globes in my glovebox which they can borrow
Bloody hell, how hard is it to change a globe, yet there are plenty of them on the road everyday.

Hi,
I agree they look great when fitted, I saw one on a recent trip also. I took my lights out to have a look at how complicated it would be. From what I saw all you need to do is pop the tail light assembly out. Cut/drill out the socket hole, install stop/tail socket and stop/tail bulb and splice wires into existing wires directly below the new spot, insulate and whala. What could possibly go wrong? When I get a spare moment I will be trying it out for myself. The job should only take about an hour.
If still not sure try asking another Auto Electrician
Cheers

Hi Spoon,
I took my car to the auto electrician near my place this morning and he said that he's prepared to do it, however after he carefully looked at the tail lights he said that he needs to order Toyota stop/tail sockets and bulb holders (as he didn't have them in stock) so my appointment has been pushed until next week.
I have also removed the tail lights before I went to the electrician and was actually explaining to him how it can be done, he then told me why didn't I do it myself (as it's straight forward according to him), I said I'm not that confident drilling or cutting my new car and I'd rather someone else do it for me without me watching and I'm prepared to pay for that
Anyway, if you gonna do it yourself, try and source some sockets first, Nissan sells all 3 bulb holders for each side for $49, however they don't sell the sockets where these bulbs fit into separately, as they come part of the lens (i.e. the tail light assembly itself).

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification
OK Guys,
I'm back with my modified tail lights.
They look great, althoug I can't tell much because it's too bright outside, but I can see the globe has been fitted correctly and the socket has also been screwed on to the base, so I could change the bulb if I want to later.
These are now extra tail and brake lights at the top.
For those who are interested in having this mod done, the electrician near my place had enough practise doing this on my car, so he's experienced in doing this for the others
I got charged $125 (including labour) but I think it's worth it (lucky my wife is not home today) Richi you should take advantage of that as well
His details are:
Paterson Auto Electrics
93 Bath Road, KIRRAWEE NSW 2232
Tel. 9542 1494
The guy's name is David
Good luck guys.
I might be able to take some photos at night to show you the difference.
