Yes, I realised that when I bought the exy, however if the ADR is to be followed, it is much safer to have the reflectors at a higher level. That is why you see nearly all reflectors being part of the tail light assembly. But the bumper ones will do fine too.

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a clause in the ADR that states the reflector is not to be located above a certain height from the ground (possibly due to headlight aim - headlights aren't meant to be aiming at the top of a vehicle).

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification

If memory serves me right, the Australian Vehicle Standards states that a set of rear reflectors should not be any higher than 1.5m. In cases where this is not appropriate, a height no greater than 2.1m.
Over the years that I have had to deal with them AVS, they have been very flexible with the guidelines/standards.

Fitting another set of reflectors, shouldn’t pose any issue, as the standard has been meet. And this would only increase the visibility of the vehicle.

I assume that the insert from Jalal is from the Australian Vehicle Standards Act.

Jalal:

Glad you replied and pointed me back a page - - boy those things are BRIGHT. emoticon

If ever rear-ended, the other driver would be hard pressed to say he didn't know you were stopping emoticon

Looking at your pics and info has me (somewhat) interested - especially WRT the added brightness of the reverse lights.

Couple of questions (if you don't mind):

1. did you get yours from the same supplier / location ? If yes, I assume there's no problem there....

2. What's the configurations of your lights - top-to-bottom ?

3. did you have to make any changes other than the brake switch ? Thinking about the turn signals.....

4. Are the reverse light "significantly" brighter ??

5. Are these the more "modern" looking lights that seem to be on most new vehicles these days ??

6. How long was the shipping to Au ?

TIA - Cheers

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification

Hi Roger,

Here are some answers:

1. I got mine from Nissan Taiwan, They're genuine Nissan tail lights and so are these.

2. Light configuration as follows (reflector-brake/parker lights-turning signal and the last bottom section is the reverse light)

Please note however that only the brake/parker light is LED. The turning signal and the reverse lights are standard bulbs.

3. No other changes are needed apart from the brake switch which is VERY easy to change (twist motion and its out) The tail light cluster plugs in into your existing factory harness.

The hardest part of the installation was the need to remove all internal plastic panels from the boot area to get to the harnesses.

4. The reverse lights are brighter indeed for 2 reasons

A. The lens is clear plastic.
B. The internals of the lens are chrome, therefore the reflection and the spread of the light is much better than standard.

5. These tail lights are modern of course because they use the latest LED technology, but I think you're referring to the altesa tail lights which are clear from top to bottom, in which case these ones are not like that.

6. Shipping to me in Sydney was within 3 days from making the payment.

NOTE: Unlike the factory tail lights where I was able to modify the top section to light-up and use it as yet another brake/parker light (not that I need another one of course emoticon ) you will NOT be able to do that with these tail lights as there is simple no space there for a light bulb, but the good thing about these tail lights , is that the middle section of the brake/parker lights is bigger than the factory ones we have.

I hope this helps.

Jalal:

VERY helpful - thanks kindly.

While my interest is "peaked" they're still very much a "nice-to-have" modification...

They are quite expensive....will have to wait until I get some other "needed" accessories / mods off the radar screen.

Cheers

Re: X-Trail Tail Lights Modification

Hi All,
Just thought you would like to see my new LED taillights, it took me about 1 1/2 hours to install, with the help of my trusty assistant Emma.

The fiddliest part was prising the connectors apart to uninstall the old lights, but then again we didn't completely remove the inside panels.

Now you can see how it looks, we think they look great, they really suit the silver exy.

Regards
Chris.
