Sound proofing the x-trail

With the impending installation of upgraded speakers, I decided to add some sound proofing to the front end of the x-trail. Please, no comments on the quality of the work, it isn't finished yet.

 What I did:

Placed bitumen based heat and noise matting under the front and rear carpet area. Yes, it goes UNDER the carpet.
Image Image

Bitumen based paint used to coat the inside of the door trim. Added weight to stop noise coming in through the door.
Image

Bitumen based paint used to coat the inner door frame.
Image

Bitumen based matting used to cover the out door frame. Attached using 'liquid nails'.
Image

Rubber used to cover the large access holes to stop resonance. Attached using 'liquid nails' and sealed with gutter sealant.
Image

The standard heavy plastic sheeting will also be added after the speakers are installed next week.

More pics to come, but early test drives revealed a good drop in outside noise entering the cabin. ie; engine and road/tyre noise.

Outlay, less then $100. Time, 2-3 days between drying.

Re: Sound proofing the x-trail

I've always thought it daunting to try and get the matting onto the inside of the outer door panel.

How did you find it Brett ?
Any tricks or tips besides the liquid nails ?

Re: Sound proofing the x-trail

Kev (and others),

The inside of the outer panel is very easy to cover. Once the plastic sheeting is removed, there are two big access holes and also the speaker hole if needed.

The panel is actually in 3 horizontal pieces, with nothing to get in the way of the sound proofing. I simply cut 3x 1m lengths (about 25mm wide) and then cut each in half (500mm) for easy insertion through the panel access hole. Apply a little 'liquid nails' to the back and press into place. All up it only took about 2 hours.

Kev, have a look inside the door mate. You will see how easy it is and how the panel is in 3 horizontal pieces. You can see 2 of the panels in the second last photo.

 Good luck. emoticon

More sound proofing, this time to the rear tailgate.

As seen in the first pic, the flimsy material used by Nissan is very thin. I have used the same sound proofing product which was used on the doors. The difference in thickness is obvious...

Now, what else can I find to cover... emoticon

Re: Sound proofing the x-trail

I was looking at the firewall trim and sound proofing in my 07 Xtrail in the area of where you put your feet [at this time only passenger side]
and I noticed that it was crumbling into small pieces. I was wondering has anyone else has a similar problem.
It is about the area of where you toes would be against the fire wall between the carpet and sound proofing.
It is a non flexing vinyl type material about 2mil thick.

Re: Sound proofing the x-trail

report this to your nissan dealer as it is a warranty problem , the local gold coast dealer has done many of these under warranty and should be replaced .... only draw back is .... the complete dash needs to be removed to have this carried out and the car is needed for 1 poss 2 days to have this work carried out .....

Re: Sound proofing the x-trail

I went to a Nissan dealer to get my firewall trim sorted out the other week.
Now it will be fixed at the end of the month.
They will need my vehicle for two days to get it fixed all under warranty emoticon
