Re: Entertainment solution for T31 - in dash DVD or Carputer
VMS GPS Bluetooth DVD etc etc
This will do the trick, I'll be installing one in my own vehicle once I get back from overseas.
The added bonus is full iPod control and GPS too.
I'm working with the local agent to put together a deal for X-Trail owners - we'll be using mine to sort out any connection problems and to make sure the steering wheel controls still work

Aussiehoudini
Whats that system worth, do you know?
Its a great set up and the screen looks mad.
Its a hell of a lot of stuff in the glovebox.
Surely were looking at a couple of grand.

Re: Entertainment solution for T31 - in dash DVD or Carputer
Hi all,
The VMS is $2399 available from GPSoz here in Mona Vale, Sydney (for you Tony).
The Carputer solution Aussiehoudini has as an example will cost as follows...
screen = lilliput 629 adapted for double-din mounting = $750
motherboard = D945GCLF2 = $135
psu = M2ATX = $90
sata HDD (notebook 160Gb) = $90
200w amp = $220
USB GPS receiver = $85
DVB-T + FM radio USB module = $120
Slim external slot-load dvd/cd player = $100
Navigation routing software with Aus maps (coPilot) = $199
Total = $1789
So you pay a premium of $600 for an already integrated system, but without the flexability of a computer system.
Another important thing to note is that the resolution of the Lilliput screen for the carputer is 800x480 and is fully readable in sunlight (with the sunroof open) as it uses transflective screen technology. I have not found any integrated system yet with even half of this resolution nor able to be viewed in full sunlight.

Thats not a bad price for the Carputer system considering all the goodies you get with it,

Re: Entertainment solution for T31 - in dash DVD or Carputer
Yes it would Mark.
The $600-$800 for the eeePC netbook with harddisk drive would cover the $450 for motherboard, power supply, dvd drive and harddisk drive. All the other items such as external touchscreen mounted in the dash, navigation software, gps receiver, usb tv+fm module and power amp to drive the car speakers would still be needed.
Maybe you could dismantle the eeePC screen to mount in the dash but the cabling would not be easy to modify to a dash mount location.
Many paople use notebooks mounted either under the seat or in the boot for a carputer as it all works as a unit "out-of-the-box" and you can take it with you. They just have cables to plug the dash mounted screen and power amp into the notebook.
The main problem with using notebooks is that the startup time is longer and turn-off is a manual operation when you leave the car.
For a carputer the motherboard can be set to "sleep mode" on power-off and turn-on almost instantaneous and automatically with the ignition switch.
A carputer is more work but has definite advantages over a notebook which is easier.

Just make sure you get them to check EVERY cable and connection in the kit before you leave the store. I wasted 6 hours today with them and their installer as they couldn't figure out what cable was missing and the boss was out at Penrith. That said I will be asking them for a better price on future purchases (I've already got them down to $2100) and I'll be doing ther installations myself from now on.

Hi Al,
One thing I could not find on the website was the screen res of the VMS.
Can you find it anywhere in the user manual ?
