Second Fuel Tank Capacity

Hi all
Just picked up my X-trail today and it had a second fuel tank fitted. The dealer couldn’t exactly tell me how much it carried.

I have looked on the web for a second fuel tank option but could find anything.

Is there anyone out there that has a second tank, that can tell me how much they usually carry

Cheers Wally

Re: Second Fuel Tank Capacity

Hi Wally and welcome to the forums.

This is VERY interesting as it has been talked about before by many xtrailers, yet none (as far as I know) went a head and done it.

While I can't help you with the information you're asking in terms of capacity, I would be very interested to see how and where the 2nd fuel tank is mounted.

Can you please post some pics of it on the forum if you don't mind?

Re: Second Fuel Tank Capacity

Hey I think you better get the dealer to check the x-trail underneath, because it's just too corroded!. I think that this is covered for like 5 years under nissan warranty.

Re: Second Fuel Tank Capacity

Hi all

The under body is spotless for rust ( what you can see is the red dust of bauxite.
As for the Exhaust(surface rust) as the vehicle has been sitting around for 8 months

Re: Second Fuel Tank Capacity

BillieWally,

It looks like you have had the muffler re-positioned. Does the tank sit lower than the muffler?...If not, maybe the muffler can be re-positioned to increase the rear clearance (with or without a second tank).

Do you expect any issues with heat from the muffler radiating into the cabin or affecting the under-carriage?

Does your fuel gauge work for both tanks,or only the original. How will you know if you are low on the second tank?

Enough questions for now!

Re: Second Fuel Tank Capacity

I have found out that the orginal muffler had to be replaced & the position of its replacement moved, to fit the tank.
See Pic

Heat radiationg from the muffler, should be less than the orginal unit, The replace ment unit that was fitted is less restricaive.

Second tank fuel gauge is on the far right of the pic. So far it seems to work well.
There is an external fuel pump that transfers the fuel, from one tank to the other. There is a overflow return from the main to the second tank, so you cant presurerise the main tank.
The guage has a switch for the pump, and a row of green led's for fuel level, and a red led to indicate empty.

If you want to know more just sing out

Cheers

Re: Second Fuel Tank Capacity

Wally,

I got a call today from Sutherland Shire Off-Road to come and have a look (take photos) of an xtrail which has just been through an operation of fitting the second fuel tank and some other bits and pieces.

I went over to have a look and as soon as I went under the car to see where the second fuel tank was mounted, I remembered your exy, because it is exactly the same fuel tank and mounted in exactly the same spot emoticon

You would be happy to know that the capacity of this second tank is 50LT

Here are some pics I took today of this second fuel tank

As you can see, the catch with fitting this second tank which is located behind the towbar, is that you will need to change the bulky factory muffler at the same time and replace it with a smaller one.

While the replacement muffler is far from being a winner in the looks department, I can tell you that it sounds exactly the same as the factory one and not louder at all.

Also, the way this second tank will operate is through a pump connected to the factory fuel filler line (photo above)

This second tank will pump fuel into the factory tank when it runs-out of fuel and the in-dash indicator will tell you how much fuel left in the second tank.

The cost of this set-up which includes the second fuel tank and the replacement muffler is $1,220 (supply & fit). This price is offered by Sutherland Shire Off-Road and I am not sure what is the price of it elsewhere.

While I was taking photos of this exy, the guys showed what else they had fitted to it emoticon

It seems that our friend is all geared-up to attack the toughest of tracks around Australia, which is nice to see emoticon

P.S. They told me he's not a member of our forum (yet) emoticon
