Re: Diesel Grades
My first tank (filled at the dealership) gave me around 8.6l/100km around town, the 2nd Woolworths /Caltex is giving me 9.8l/100km same route same driving style same traffic....
Not really conclusive but interesting just the same.

Re: Diesel Grades
Hi Alan,
Just for giggles when you run that tank down and if you get a chance to fill up with BP would you report back?
Make sure you reset your fuel economy thing by holding down the i button.
Also, have a look on the receipt for what kind of diesel it is - it should say G10 or G50.
Have you noticed any difference in engine noise or power with the new tank? I guess you wouldnt know what was in there from the dealership anyway and might need to do a few more fills to get a baseline!
It has been really hot over here in Adelaide so my usage for the same trip has been around 8 where it is normally around 7ish. Im running back on BP again.
I did manage to half fill my tank with Caltex to see how it would go - my usage was higher also.
Congrats on the new TL BTW - they are a ripper car!
Cheers,
Dronus

Re: Diesel Grades
I use my exy for work and to be honest haven't given different diesel brands/types any thought. I generally fill up where I see it cheap. Majority has been Safeway and haven't had any issues or economy problems.

Re: Diesel Grades
In Melbourne we only have normal BP Diesel so I am envious of the states where Ultimate diesel is available
Since new I have only used BP Diesel. Average of mixed driving over 4000k is about 7.7l per 100km. A trip to Torquay and back from Essendon averaged 6.2 l/100km. Can't wait til the engine loosens up more.
I noticed in the owners manual that the recommended fuel for the diesel exy is that it should have a 50 or higher cetane rating.
As such I stick with BP. I will give the others a try soon only if their cetane rating is 50+. Otherwise they won't get a look in.

Re: Diesel Grades
I have been running the BP G10 for the last 2-3 tanks as the BP servo on Churchill Road has been around $1.14 for a while, while all the other BP's have been $1.27 or so. Unfortunately that BP doesnt have ultimate, only normal G10. Saves me $5-$6 per tank and the G10 seems ok. Doing the maths my usage has been 1 litre per hundred higher (from about 7 to 8) so out of 54litres for 800km normal usage im now doing about 60L for 750km - im probably better off paying more for the ultimate!!
The servos with Ultimate are all more expensive than the ones without, very interesting.
I asked my cheap BP (its a new one) if they are getting ultimate but they didnt know anything about it.
Think i might go back to the Ultimate!. I suggested to a guy at work who has a Golf to try BP and he reported good things... Im staying clear of all the other brands.

Re: Diesel Grades
Dronus
I have been doing some investigation on the net on the cetane level in diesel fuel from the big 4 oil companies
BP – Cetane 50
Shell – Cetane 49
Caltex – 46
Mobil – ?.
Mobil did not actually advertise the cetane level on their website so I rang someone named Robin who worked at the refinery and was very helpful. He believes that Mobil would only make a product that meets the minimum Australian standards which is 46. We discussed the DPF filter and perhaps some of the problems may be caused by a lower level of cetane.
From Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetane_number
Fuels with higher cetane number which have shorter ignition delays provide more time for the fuel combustion process to be completed. Hence, higher speed diesels operate more effectively with higher cetane number fuels.
Now to complicate matters there are only two refineries in Victoria operated by Mobil (Altona) and Shell (Corio). As such, those that don’t refine in Victoria purchase products from either Shell or Mobil. There are reciprocal arrangements in other states. What I have found is that Caltex and BP both use Mobil diesel
So in closing I see that I have 3 options, continue using BP (which is Mobil), switch to Shell (I filled up last night – lets see how it goes) or look at additives that claim to boost the cetane level. Anyone had any experience??
By the way from 1/1/2009 all diesel fuel in Australia must now be 10ppm.
Australian standards can be found here
http://www.environment.gov.au/atmosphere/fuelquality/standards/diesel/index.html

Alan - My dealership said to avoid it as it will damage your engine real quick!

Re: Diesel Grades
I gathered that from the discussions with my matehe thinks the $8 he saved on the tankfull will be more than offset by the damage he's done.....apparently the Navara has a DPF similar to the X-Trail and biodiesel renders it useless
