Changed the oil, so change the fuel?
OK guys, I'm looking for your opinions here....
Just changed my engine oil over to Castrol Edge 5W-30 (from goodness-knows-what-the-mechanic-put-in-there-at-last-service oil), so am wanting to know whether it's a good idea/necessary to change the fuel I'm know putting through the Exy?
I've always used the regular 91 octane and never had any probs, but does the lower viscosity oil call for a higher octane fuel to further enhance performance (I'm guessing with an ECU reset in the mix there somewhere)?
Thanks all

Re: Changed the oil, so change the fuel?
I find it strange that the Service Manual states 95 RON for the petrol Xtrail.
I have not checked the Owner's Handbook yet to see if it matches.

From memory, I think the handbook says "not less than 91 RON fuel to be used"
Kristy: You should try and use 95 RON sometimes.

Re: Changed the oil, so change the fuel?
Jalal, that is correct....owners manual says "gasoline of at least 91 RON to be used". In Europe the minimum requirement is 95 RON. Having only recently (and I mean last couple of days) come into possession of the service manual - I have not had a chance to check it as yet. Curious that it would be inconsistent with the owners manual though...
I ran 95 RON for about 6 months, but was then advised by a mechanic to use 91 RON because the car "did not require it and would not be of enough additional benefit".
Anyway, that being by-the-by at this stage as it was a good year or more ago (and obviously was perhaps slightly ill-advised), I will go back to running 95 RON. I just did not know whether it was then recommended to go higher than that given the changes I've now made with regards to oil, spark plugs etc.

Re: Changed the oil, so change the fuel?
Not really related to the oil change Kristy. I was running on 95 when I switched to using the Synthetic oil and only started using 98 when I put the piggy back ECU (I can't use anything less than 98 at the moment).
The electronic service manual came from Europe, hence why the reference to 95 RON in it.

Re: Changed the oil, so change the fuel?
Sure the service manual comes from europe, but how much of the Xtrail's fuel system and engine are significantly different from the european versions that 95RON is required where we are supposedly able to get away with 91RON ?

Re: Changed the oil, so change the fuel?
It's not the fuel system that is different Kev, it the fuel quality that is different between one country and another. 91RON is being sold as Premium Fuel in Asia for example.

Re: Changed the oil, so change the fuel?
I would stick with the manual on octane... anything higher is a waste of money and with the price of gas keeps going up it is not worth it.... the price difference from the 3 octane that we get ranges about 10 - 20% higher... I am sure I will not get that same in mileage so not point changing
