Recovery / Snatching

The article in the "Off Road" section of this site has a good photo of an x-trail being towed using an equaliser strap.

As this is the best way to attach tow ropes or more importantly snatch straps has anyone got some more detail of how to do this.

What is an equaliser strap (will a tree protector do?)

How do you attach it to the car?

How should you attach it to the snatch strap?

Same for rear? - I was thinking of using the towbar pin as a snatch point - mainly for dragging others when required. Are there two tow points at the rear and would use of an equaliser be better for this as well?

Cheers

Re: Recovery / Snatching

This is one of those topics that is always controversial because 'real 4x4' owners will lament the lack of super-strong recovery points on the car-like chassis of the xtrail, and some are even relucant to do so for fear of snatching failure.

I guess the main points are that when recovering an xtrail, make sure both recovery points are used. An equaliser strap can be made from other straps as long as it strong enough and equalises the load to both points. I'm no expert in this area, but taking a 4wd course will fill in the blanks.
I also think a specific equaliser strap can be brought from 4wd shops.

As far as being the recover-er, the tow bar is only rated to pull 1800kg (from memory). Of course it can probably take more, but still a bit short of up to 6 tonnes that a snatch strap can take.

Then add all the scenarios of sand, mud, pulling a 4wd, pulling a car, pulling a softroader, getting pulled by either. Its a can of worms.

Re: Recovery / Snatching

I honestly wouldnt recommend "snatching" unless you have been shown properly how to do it. I put the photo on the board to answer another question, not really as a "how to snatch"
If you want some gear drop into a 4WD shop and explain what your after, snatch, equaliser/chain, rated shackles. Its a good idea to carry them anyway even if you dont know how to use them - it will allow someone else to help you out.
Also snatching isnt "Towing" so a tow rope/strap wont do the job.
You can use the towbar as your recovery point.
cheers
peter
(hope message doesnt sound rude ect, just sitting down and having a beers after a return trip to Melbourne in a day and half)
But I really do recommend doing a course with a club or commercial.

Re: Recovery / Snatching

Guys,
Although I agree that this recovery kit is a good price, be mindful of buying quality. We 'tested' a few such brands on a recent 4wd course and snapped a snatch strap and also a winch strap. One of the bow shackles also bent and we had trouble undoing the pin. I believe that you can't go past the reputable brands, ARB/TJM/TUFF GREEN/OL to name a few. Just my 2c worth, sorry.

No need to be sorry Brett.
Most of us can only go by quoted ratings unless someone has first-hand experience with the gear.

Re: Recovery / Snatching

Brett,

After some advice on which of these two straps is better for use as an equaliser strap for the Xtrail.

Image

The equaliser strap has safety hooks but not sure if they will fit the eyes on the Xtrail recovery points and it is a little longer which will be better.
The tree trunk protector is shorter but allows use of bow shackles to fit the recovery points.

Kev,
I have and use the one of the left, with the hooks already attached. It is a great equaliser strap and the hooks fit fine.
