Here are the answers i got back today from a few people.
Nissan guys have not heard of any problems with the Towing points
Fitting an aftermarket hook may be achieved, but may take a bit of time (read costs) and the guys I spoke with were unsure if it could be done without major mods.
Use an equaliser where possible to reduce pull on points - they are only thin and small bolts.
If really concerned use the rear towbar (ie best bet use a slide in Recovery hook that are available)
Hope it helps (but not perfect). Other then that I pretty much stick with my previous commnts.

I found this a very good read regarding xtrail recovery points and snatching. The last few posts on this thread are the best if you cant be bothered reading it all.

I have read that before and the advice about what to carry is good advice, as is the thing about towing more times then snatchem.
But and this is my view not "a Guide". Also I am writing it with a smile (quite often when I write things it comes accros differently to my intention as in with some sort of attidude)
They keep referring to the xtrail points as tiedowns. They are called Tow points in the manual for recovery from sand or snow (exactly the same wording as in GU Patrols for the right hand point) So although I have always used a bridal, I dont actually have a problem with the points.
this is based on the Series 1 manual and from my earlier post when both Geoff and I checked it out before
To be honest I hate snatching any cars. But a lot these days have "tie downs" the best way is to look at the manual of someones car before doing it. In fact if someone believes that a point is only a tiedown they should not be giving any advice that its ok to use for pulling or even ok with a bridal. If its a tiedown - its cant be used fullstop
A good way to check your points if you have concerns is actually write to Nissan technical. I know some Territory guys who did this to Ford and got a very good answer.
Apart from that, dont snatch without some form of training, and if you are concerned and are going to do a lot of travelling by yourself grab a handwinch.
So I suppose the main point I am saying is that I hate snatchem any car, prefer to pull/tow or use the towbar fitment. The problem with xtrails is that you have to use shackes on the front which introduces new dangers.
Nobody should ever recommend that its okay to use "tiedowns" for towing or snatchem, even with a bridal.
I always work on the fact that nissan calls them "tow points" compared to in some of there other vehicles where they refer to "tiedowns".

If you like I will send a letter to Nissan Technical and ask. I will frame it against the agreed competency for "Recover a 4WD" taught by Training organisations, trying to be as specific as I can. Although I dont have my exy anymore, I do a lot of trips with them so I would like to know what can be done. Plus I want to know if it is okay for them to get me out of the goo. will let you know the result
I know that MMA did some testing and announced the results after some questions about the ability to do a single point snatch on their Pajeros. S o there is good precendence
This is the link to the response from Ford about their Recovery Points. So maybe there is value in getting the answer from Nissan technical as well

I agree that that was posted there and when the question was asked about where the rating for the hook came from - it couldnt be found and was going to be removed. (I think it might be on page 1 of this thread)
To be honest I think it was a guide put there with the best intentions, but without any reference to the real document it should not be "used"
Its a bit like my first comments above about why I think its ok, but I think it is better to ask Nissan.
One example may be as well, both my Xtrail and Patrol owners guides say that
"towing hooks - for Freeing vehicle from sand, snow or mud".
But in the Patrol manual it further adds that
"Never tow the vehicle using only the towing hooks" and "The towing hook is under tremendous force when used to free a stuck vehicle"
So same manufacturer but when discussing the same piece of equipment (Towing Point) they add extra things.
It would be helpful if someone could copy the actual words used in their manual and page number so I can quote in the letter.
Geoff: I think that the information highlighted by Shane should be removed in case anyone uses it as advice. In the same manner that we had the recall notice (throttle) removed from the thread and replaced by a link to the real document
Shane do you think this is the best approach

On our series II ST Can only find 1 recovery/tiedown point at rear left. Where is the second?

There is two at the front of the XTrail. I have since used them with an equaliser strap to get out of a bog
