Hi Guys.
May be a bit late on this subject but have read in my manual the following quote.
Page 10-5 In Case of Emergency
" Freeing Vehicle From Sand,Snow or Mud "
* Use the towing hooks ONLY, not other parts of the vehicle.Otherwise, the vehicle body will be damaged.
*Use the towing hooks ONLY to free a vehicle stuck in Sand,snow,mud etc. NEVER tow the vehicle for a long distance using only the towing hooks.
*The towing hook is under tremendous force when used to free a stuck vehicle. Always pull the cable straight out from the front of the vehicle.NEVER pull on the hook at a sideways angle.
WARNING
Do not allow anyone to stand near the towing line during the operation.

Just for your information we were snatch strapped out & towed for 500 metres on our last trip to Stockton Beach using a front hook only with no problems at all.(We were bogged pretty well.)
During our accredited training course 6 months ago the instructor said the Tow Bar without the tongue using the bolt ?( not sure what it is called ) was a good towing point & used it twice during the training day with no problems.

Thanks embi, yeah got the 2 Tow/Tiedown points at front of vehicle. Shane quoted an article earlier in this thread which mentioned the xtrail to have 2 hooks both front and rear. We appear to only have 1 at the rear of our Xy. Is this right?

Thanks guys that clears that up for me, but raises some other thoughts
1. Would the rear hook have the same load rating as each front hook?
2. If you don't have a tow bar would it be ok to be recovered or help recover another car using just this 1 point?

Sorry to dig this thread from the grave, but today I did a "Heights Safety" course at work, and during it we covered a bit about angles and points of attachment for fall restraints, in particular with static lines.
The reason I bring this up is that there is a "golden rule" where there is an angle of 120 degrees or more, the actual force or stress on the static line fixing points is GREATER than the load/force being supported.
It's abit hard to describe it, but basically (keeping it on topic) where you use an equalising strap on the two front tie-down brackets on the X-Trail (when using them for recovery purposes), the equalising strap needs to make as "pointy" a triangle as possible. If the equaliser strap between the two tie-down brackets is virtually a straight line (or near to or greater than 120 degrees) then there is a high risk of the tie-down brackets being pulled towards each other (and/or ripped off) as the force exerted on them will be MORE than the actual towing/snatching weight/force!!!
If anyone is having trouble understanding this, I'll draw up a quick picture of it and attach it to the thread.

I think I know what you mean?
Does anyone know the minimum length for the equaliser strap we should therefore use for the exy?
I have been looking into this only recently and have decided I should get one to help spread the load from a snatch strap.
