Re: Recovery kits, saws and trees

The maxtrax get a good rep with those who use them......

And I have the Husky that I can always take offroad. Although in my past experience 4wding in a Patrol, the trees down are either too big to move (think 1m + trunks) or easily broken up and shifted with maybe an axe or bowsaw and a couple of blokes.

Have to pull out all the accumulated recovery gear and put some of the excess into the Xtrail sometime soon emoticon

David
If your talking about the 'turfor' type hand winch, they would be perfectly suited to recovering an X trail due to the fact that YOU will be doing all the work cranking the handle.
Yeah sure its slow and very tireing, but you will cause next to no damage at all.

I have used them to pull a Kia Sportage in the sleet up here in the mountains a couple of years ago on a rocky mountain (my Patrol with winch was behind him), he was in the car and I was turfing. 10 mins later, exhausted and relieved, he was pulled out.

A good recomendation for your trip. emoticon

Re: Recovery kits, saws and trees

emoticon Thanks for your info, I think I will ,run with a pair of Maxtrax, they can ride up on the roofrack, I was looking for something more compact than a Turfor type winch Tony, they take up a lot of room, are heavy and found this
   http://www.bushranger.com.au/emergency_hand_winch.php
A mate has a very old winch of similar design used both on his farm and for his Hilux and swears by it. This one is a bit lighter. reasonably priced and I am tempted to buy it and try it out. Would have to be better than nothing. What do you think.

  emoticon cheers David

Re: Recovery kits, saws and trees

Yeah I have seen these in the shops.
I regard them as oversized wire tensioners like fencers' use on post and rail fences with wire running through the posts.
Never seen them in use though.
Definately a lot smaller than a turfor.

edit, spelling

David,

Now that you have slept on it (hopefully not literally) did you get it, and if so how do you think it performs?

Re: Recovery kits, saws and trees

   emoticon Hi Kane

Wouldn,t touch it with a barge pole, it is rated to pull 1.5 tons but only has 3 metres of cable.
Therefore with the pulley it would drag you 1.5 metres further into the bog?

Will buy a pair of Maxtrax and hope if I do get bogged I have company capable of using my snatch strap or tow rope to help me.

 emoticon Cheers David
