T31 Towbar lockscrew
Not sure if this should go in this section or the warrenty section so feel free to move it if i got it wrong..
On the weekend i went to put my genuine towbar back into the square thing (it normally lives in the boot after a shin bruising, grease on white clothes incident).
When i went to tighten up the locking screw underneath that stops the towbar from rattling around the nut fell out.
The nut it welded in two spots to the underside of the square bit. With mine, both welds had snapped. If this had happoned at any other time i would have lost the nut and screw!
Ill call the dealer this week to find out what the go is with warrenty, but it might pay to check yours out next time you fit the towbar..

Re: T31 Towbar lockscrew
Andrew
This happened to me not long after buying the Xy.
Due to towing a trailer a lot I was tightening the goose neck and the weld broke, as you say, 2 little tacks, pathetic.
Easy fix, got the welder out and welded the entire diameter of the nut to the bar.
No problems since then.

Re: T31 Towbar lockscrew
To me that bolt is a wast of time, the position of it under the receiver is all wrong and its there only to take up the slake of the hitch to stop the noise, the weight of the hitch when under load will allways put it ontop of the bolt and then stress where the nut is welded.
The bolt needs to be on the side or better still the receiver and hitch need to have less tolerance or a shim placed around the hitch to take up the slack. I'll be fitting some shims to the top and bottom of my hitch when i get a chance to fix the problem.

Re: T31 Towbar lockscrew
Why not drill and reweld the nut to the top of the receiver ?

Nissan might void warranty saying that it was modified.

Re: T31 Towbar lockscrew
I think it would be better on the side, but its probably on the bottom to make it easier to get to.
I asked Nissan if it was covered under warrenty, it sounds like it is - they are just checking as the towbars are fitted by a contractor and supplied by nissan so they are working out who does it.
I agree that the weight of the trailer stops it rattling, but when you go over a bump it rattles as the weight is taken off the towbar. I tried a loop of duct tape on the bar but it wouldn't go into the receiver so it will have to wait..

Re: T31 Towbar lockscrew
I found that by changing from the standard pin/shaft supplied with the towbar to a lockable pin that is a bit thicker, it stops the towbar tongue from rattling as it grabs it quite firmly when the locking pin shaft goes through the holes.

Re: T31 Towbar lockscrew
Like Jalal I did this also, but in my last Patrol the hole in the tongue became elongated (oval) due to always towing a trailer.
I removed the tongue and welded around the hole to make it smaller. Then filed it down so it was exactly the same size as the pin.
It worked for a good 9 months solid towing.

Re: T31 Towbar lockscrew
Note that welding reduces the strength of the material around the heat affected zone. Do take care.
