buying an exy that has done a lot of towing

Hi All,

Can I have your opinion on wether I should have any misgivings about buying a 2007 exy auto that has done 54,000 kms, a fair amount of which has been clocked up towing a 1500 caravan?

Hi Mike,

If the xtrail has a genuine Nissan towbar fitted and the previous owner used a weight distribution hitch, I'd have it professionally checked for chassis cracks as reported HERE.

Re: buying an exy that has done a lot of towing

Thanks for the advice. The cracked chassis was picked up when the exy went for its roadworthy and has now been attended to by the Nissan dealer (it did have a stabiliser fitted while towing) so that issue has been resolved.

I would appreciate any comments about the auto transmission/engine coping with the demands of towing - anything I should be wary of?

Thanks,

Mike

As it's an auto, it's quite capable of towing without major dramas. Manual xtrails have had major clutch issues with towing heavy loads.

The impact to the auto transmission box can be felt straight away. If the car is changing gears normally and the transmission is not slipping, everything should be fine.

Thanks for the comments so far - great to hear from people with first hand knowledge.

I guess I am just a bit concerned about the towing overstretching the capabilities of the exy - seems like its not an issue.
