Do you guys really think that a second cat would cost the engine almost 10kw ? I personally think its a reprogram in the ecu along with the cat to lower emissions etc.
Am sorry that you didn't find this out before the purchase and that is the main reason I created this thread on the forum (even before Nissan's official announcement about the ST-S)
Yes, it is the second cat that will cost you around 10KW. Tighter emission control is what causing the decrease in power, nothing to do with the ECU at all.
But cheer-up and look at the bright side, there is a work-around for that too and you will feel double the power increase we're getting now from our 1st and 2nd generation modified xtrails

Did my first long trip in the 2006 X-Trail STS this past weekend and was very impressed.
Here are some general notes :
(a) With myself, wife and our baby the rear storage area was loaded to over-flowing with stuff. The storage space in the X-Trail is fantastic, I was really surprised about how much stuff I crammed in. (our pusher takes up a lot of space).
(b) Once we unloaded stuff where we were staying, we did 800kms of touring with four adults and the baby in a car seat. Whilst the adults in the back were a little cramped, the leg room in the back is very good. In fact, the other couple with us own an '04 Nissan Pathfinder and the leg room in the back of that car is far worse than the X-Trail.
(c) At the top end of the King River valley in Victoria, I tried out the 4WD capability of the car. Being a previous owner of a 78 BJ40 Land Cruiser I was a bit dubious about an auto soft-roader 4WD but the X-Trail did what it was designed to do. The ground clearance was excellent over the rocky roads and the 4WD (in locked mode) along with the Auto in "Low" worked well. I still had to use my brakes on the decent, but over-all was very happy.
With the 4WD system in auto, you just barely detect the rear drive kicking in.
(d) At no stage did I sense the car was struggling for power so I don't know if I will end up removing the second cat converter. With the car fully loaded with gear and people we were overtaking others with ease.
(e) The sun-roof really brightens the whole car up during the day and almost puts a new perspective on drive touring. I was very impressed with that sun-roof.
Dislikes : Not many, but they are :
- 4WD switch is obstructed by steering wheel.
- Dash indicator lights are not bright enough for day time driving with sun roof open
- I found myself almost always accidentally turning off over-drive when moving the auto into reverse (must have a big thumb)
- Already two decent stone chips on the car after 2000km (has the same problem with my Pulsar and others agree - Nissan paint jobs are not the toughest on the market)
- The front passeger CD stoage compartment was coming open on bumpy (corregated) roads.
Conclusion : Whilst the car might not have the best soft-roader looks, lack in tight corner handling and be down on power due to the second cat converter I found it to be an awesome car for country touring. The practical things I really noticed were the storage space and the rear passenger leg room. If you have a young family like myself I suggest you give the 06 STS a serious look.

Nice write up on your experiences with your exy thus far.
In every vehicle there are positives and negatives, however based in comparison with it's competition, the X-Trail performs quite well.
The 2.5L motor of the exy is quite a large motor for a 4 cyc and even at 123KW is ample.
Practicality in most aspects of it's design is probably the biggest thing going for the X-Trail.

Hi Luke
Nice post. I read with interest about the handling not being upto scratch. May i suggest you invest in a strut brace!. After putting one on my car it has really made quite a substantial difference. I regularly drive along the old pacific hwy and the Putty road and the difference with and without the strut brace is noticable. The exy really tightens up and takes corners with greater speed and poise. A flatter drive without as much body roll especially at the front. Keep in mind the exy is quiet soft at the front especially with the plastic side fenders

Hi all,
just got a question thats been bugging me lately. I bought an ST-S x-trail in december last year. It was sold to me as an ST-S extreme, so I got the sunroof, roof racks and 16" alloys, but the tail lights are still red, not the clear ones. I think its a standard ST with the EXTREME pack. The badging only says ST-S. Doesn't say EXTREME or 40th anniversary edition. Now my problem is with insurance quotes. It only gives the options for ST-S EXTREME or 40th anniversary edition, but not an option for just "ST-S". I'm now getting paranoid about my insurance as its insured as an EXTREME. I rang Nissan and gave them my VIN number and it showed up on the system as an ST. After a while on hold the guy got some more info and said it was an ST-S but even he sounded unsure and said to just go with the EXTREME option for insurance. I'm terribly confused. Can anybody please help ??

Hi Peter,
If it is an ST-S X-Treme it will have come with the ST-S X-Treme badging on the back and will have clear tail lights.
It will also have come with roof racks, 16" Alloys, fitted mats, a bonnet protector, sun roof and a rear sun shade.
There are photos of mine in the members rides sections of the website (in NSW - PMcDermott)
The only difference between mine and the stock one is I have changed to a chrome grille.
The ST-S 40th Anniversary edition had fog lights. Not sure what else.
But I can tell you for sure that if it does not have the clear tailights and badging it is not the ST-S X-Treme (see below)
Have a look at the invoice you got when you bought the car
Dont ley it get to you. At the end of the day the only difference really between the ST-S and the ST-S X-Treme is the tailights, and you can get some very nice ones in the online x-trail shop

mines got everything you mentioned the EXTREME has except for the clear tail lights and fitted mats. It doesn't bother me about not having the clear tail lights.
My problem is for insurance there isn't an option for a plain old ST-S. No such thing exists.

Hi Peter,
There is no plain old ST-S. The one you bought last year is the ST-S 40th anniversary edition and that is what you need to insure it like.
They may have dropped the 40th anniversary sticker as soon as the ST-S X-TREME was offered and cleared the 40th anniversary edition stock they had, which yours is one of them.
The ST-S 40th anniversary edition was launched in March 2006, so you bought it 9 months after that, as an old stock.

I appreciate your time on this guys, but I'm still not 100% sure. Mine is manufactured September 2006. I have seen some x-trails with the 40th anniversary sticker, mine doesn't have one. PMcDermott mentioned the 40th anniversary model has fog lights which mine doesn't have. When I bought it they billed it as an EXTREME and I insured it as such. Really there isn't that much difference, do you think the insurance company would have an issue with this ?

If it doesn't have the fog lights, as it should (being an ST-S) then they could have sold it to you as the standard ST with the EXTREME pack and they had deals like that last year to clear the ST stock.
Yours is not the ST-S X-TREME edition and it can not be insured as such, because there is a difference in the tail lights.
