Hi duxbac,
This is the butterfly screws problem/recall I mentioned earlier.
It will be great (in fact very helpful) if you can ask your mate to join the forum and make a formal and detailed post in this regard, as I believe we're heading to another recall if this comes-up again!
This will be case #3 that I know of in Australia!!
Thanks for the info. It is VERY important indeed.

Hi,jalal,this was a chance meeting outside autobarn in traralgon,and he had parked next to me,and is the same colour vechicle.This happened when the vechicle had not done that many kilos.Are they series one or series two.You would think nissan would lift its game and get it right after the american experiance.I think nissan should look at this problem on a recall basis.My daughter had a honda accord and it made a horrible grinding noise when it had done 105000ks.Took it in and they fixed it for nothing,bad heat treatment on the gears between the auto and the engine.They knew what it was and just fixed it on the quite,no recall and just keep up the myth that jap cars do not give any trouble.This worries me for sure,but the only comfort i have is mine idles very smoothly and i think would have happened by now,had it 2 1/2 years.I do not know where my exworkmate Jumbo lives these days.

This whole thread has been forwarded to Nissan Australia this morning and I'm hopeful that I will get some answers on this.
I have sent it to the same contact person in Nissan who has been very helpful to me the first time and instructed my dealer to perform the recall.
I will let you guys know when and if I receive a response.

Hi,Jalal,in the old days when we had carbies on our vechicles,all butterfly screws were rivoted,and were hard to undo.What is wrong these days?,just cheap,quick and nasty,there is no excuse for nissan to get this right,and this is a worry to me for sure.cheers

this may sound stupid, but how can you tell if this has potentially happened to your vehicle? will it have no power? it worries me if there isn't a symptom and people are driving their exy's around without any clue.

By the time the symptoms will show-up, it will be too late already 
You will loose power in the engine and it will feel like driving with 2 cylinders instead of all 4, this in turn means that the screws already found their way to the engine and.....kaput!
The fix is quite easy but very time consuming, as they need to dismantle the lower intake manifold in full to get to these screws.

My parents had their XTrail engine replacd as a result of loose butterfly screws. Initially it was believed to be a catalytic converter problem but after replacing it there was still a funny noise in the engine. One of the screws had made its way into one of the cylinders (3?) and every now and then closed the spark plug gap when the piston reached the top of the cylinder...happended once at Charters Towers and once at Birdsville! Brisbane dealer wa svery obliging and helpful. Initially it was also suspected that the closed gap had been caused by someone dropping the plug prior to installation!

What happens if there is a problem like Bundy has said after warranty runs out replacing an engine would not be cheap are we still covered does anyone know

This thread has been forwarded to Nissan Australia for further investigation and comment.
It will be greatly appreciated if you can note down the name of the dealer and the exact date the engine replacement was carried-out (no other personal details are required)
This is Case #4 that our forum has now become aware of.

Dave, if this problem happens while not under factory warranty and there is no official recall for it , you will be up for all costs associated with the replacement of the engine!
