Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Hi Jalal, *I* know that the kms don't matter, but since I don't have mechanical knowledge myself, I would like to be able to point out the different kms that people experienced, to people like Kerry's service manager. My exxy probably is fine since most of the time my driving has been easy cruising rather than flat out. However, I've had 4 warranty issues, plus the aircon blower fan has just gone, so I don't have that confidence that nothing else will go wrong.
Hi Dave, peace of mind is what I am aiming at too, by getting them checked. I could probably hang on til I get back to Qld, but that's going to be way into July and I'd rather not wait that long, but at the rate I'm going that is what will probably happen. If the engine went, there is no way on earth I'd be able to afford to replace it, I'd have to sell the vehicle for what I could get and hopefully at least be able to afford something with 4 wheels that was drivable.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Hi Tom,
The recall for the butterfly screws actually originated in America for the Sentra and Altima models which have exactly the same engine as the T30 xtrail (QR25DE).
You can advise your dealer that you are suspecting that you have exactly the same defect and the symptoms are similar and refer them to the Nissan recall campaign NTB05-058b which states the following:
quote:
2004 NISSAN SENTRA, 2004-2005 ALTIMA; VOLUNTARY SERVICE CAMPAIGN QR25DE POWER VALVE
Nissan has determined that on some 2004 model year Sentra and 2004-2005 model year Altima vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter engine there is a possibility that power valve screws located in the intake manifold may become loose. If this occurs the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and unstable engine idling or power loss may occur.
Ask them to inspect the lower intake butterfly screws to make sure they're all still there.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Hi Dave,
To answer your questions.
This preventative procedure is a MUST for every T30 xtrail owner! It's a lengthy procedure but not a hard one if you're confident enough and have time on your hands. It has been detailed in the previous pages of this thread if you wanna check it out. Otherwise just pay a mechanic or Nissan to have it done for you.
The risk of this problem materializing becomes greater when the car is driven in higher RPM ranges most of the time (i.e. lead foot like myself or someone that is towing)
As to how common it is, apparently Nissan are of an opinion that is not common enough to warrant an official recall, but that's their view. I have seen many cases reported elsewhere outside of this forum where owners were forced to fork-out big bucks for a new engine for no fault of their own!

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
I figured it would be a good idea to get a dealer to look at the butterfly screws, then at least it is on Nissans record if they are in fact loose - am I correct?

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Yes Julie, especially if you're still under the factory warranty or the extended factory warranty.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**
Al,
We have no confirmed reports of Nissan ever rectifying this problem apart from a statement saying that Nissan have used new type of butterfly screws with washers from 2006 as stated HERE
It is upto you to believe this claim or take steps to have these screws checked-out and loctited for added peace of mind.
