Adding a Glovebox Light to a T31 X-Trail

Equipment: I used a Jaycar Inset Pin Switch, (part #LE-8777 $5.55), and a “Narva” Truck and Trailer Lamp from AutoBarn (Part no. 85874BL, $5.95). Optional: Jaycar LED Festoon Light Globe (part no. ZD-0480, $14.95) for brighter white light.
Difficulty: Easy, some light soldering and dismantling required.
Duration: Should be able to do it in 2 hours.

Preparation: Cut two lengths of pair wiring, one approx. 1.2m, the other approx. 40cm. If possible, attach a Fluoro tube to the cigarette lighter so you can see what you’re doing easier (it’s dark in there!). Just don’t give yourself a zap when you get to the cigarette lighter soldering stage.
Step 1: Unscrew the 6 screws circled in red below, and 2 underneath (accessed by footwell). Pull on box to remove.

Step 2: Drill 4 holes in top of Glovebox, 2 for wiring and 2 for screws. Connect one end of 1.2m wire to one terminal, and one end of 40cm wire to other terminal (or in the case of my light assembly, just attach to metal part that holds the globe). Assemble light and screw in place. If you want brighter light, simply replace the existing globe with the Jaycar LED.

Step 3: Solder the two remaining ends of the 1.2m and 40cm wiring together (shown in picture with blue electrical tape.
Step 4: Drill an approx. 10mm hole in the position shown with the red circle. Push the pin switch thru the hole and screw in place as shown in Blue circle in Picture 1.
Step 5:Solder one end of the 40cm wire to the barrel of the switch (you may need to ‘rough it up’ with a file) and the other wire to the pin with the hole in it. Cut the Plunger of the switch in order to leave approx. 12mm exposed (test first to ensure this allows your glove box to close enough).
Step 6: Lift the Gear Stick surround directly up to expose the rear of the Cigarette Lighter. Then pull on the panel on the right hand side of the Passenger foot well to remove.
Step 7: Place the Glove box back in position, whilst passing the 1.2m wire thru the back of the cavity, and feed the wire toward the Cigarette lighter. Replace the panel described in step 6, taking care to hide the wiring.

Step 8: Solder the ends of the wire to the positive and negative terminals at the rear of the Cigarette Lighter. Some choices here, I chose to solder onto where the Nissan wires attach to the connector in one case, and in the other case I soldered to the main barrel of the cigarette lighter assembly, after roughing it up with a file. Shown with red arrows below. NOTE: Don't piggy-back on to the top connector (smaller, can be seen in image above barrel of lighter) or your glovebox won't be lit when the Headlights are on (when you need it most). I think this has to do with the 'glowing' lighter surround function.

Step 9: Replace gear stick surround and screws for the Glove box. Done!

Total cost: under $12, or $27 including optional LEDs.

Glove box light is needed in the T31's. Its a dam big black hole at night in there.

I'm going to do that to our SeX-Trail in the next week or two. I'm going to see how I go for room and go for a fluch mount LED.

Thanks for the idea and tips.

Good luck - definite improvement.

One adjustment I would suggest is the use of some wire connectors (bullet-type) so that the goons at the service centre don't ruin all your good work when they go to swap the micro-filter.

Any type which allow push-on connections would be fine.

I put a light in our T-31 as soon as we got it and it was a pretty easy process , and the boys can confirm it as they saw it at our xmas get together on the central coast here are the instructions : -

#1 head to any supermarket and or hardware store

#2 Purchase a water proof dolphin torch

#3 Place torch in glove box

#4 Close the glove box emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I can't believe how big those glove boxes are !!!

Hi. The $2 shops have a small round stickon unit, with 3 aaa batteries that you push on and off. It has 3 led bulbs and it only costs $2 and lasts forever.

Clem
I did the same although mine cost me nothing.
Went to a wedding yesterday and they were used in the table decorations.
At the end of the night I took one home and this morning stuck it to the roof of the internal of the glovebox.
Couldn't be easier.

Went the easy option that was suggested by some others and have one of those 3 led lights mounted in the glovebox - too easy! Thanks for the suggestion guys.

Cheers...
