My First Big mod for my T31. Radiator protector
Hi all
I have installed a mesh grill in behind the bumper bar to protect the oil cooler.
The car has only done 7500 kms and the radiator looks like somebody shot it with a machine gun.
Steps.
1. Remove grill, 4 clips on top, 4 lugs on the bottom.
2. Remove bumper bar, 4 clips on top, 1 under the grill, centre, 5 underneath the bar,( there are 4 underneath the plastic cover that runs under the motor), 3 torx screws under either side in front of the tyres.
3. Unclip the plastic flare that runs around the wheel arch,( pull outwards gently) but only undo 3 clips either side. look inside the from the tyre and you will see 2 screws, (1 each side) that hold the bar to the guard, and remove.
4. Pull the bar sideways to unclip from large plastic connector.
5. Pull the bar outwards from the front marginally enough to unplug the fog lamps.
6. Remove the bar.
TIP. Straighten any bent fins on the radiator with a small screwdriver before screwing mesh on.
7. Cut mesh to shape and use 4 self tapping screws to secure to the lower part of the black bar that runs across the front of the car.
( Sorry, I thought I had a photo for this but obviously I didn't take one. Just screw the mesh approx 50mm up from the bottom of the black bar)
8. I also covered the smaller slots with the off cuts from the mesh. I simply bent the mesh around the shape of the slots and used silicone to secure.
9. Re-install reversing procedure and hope that you don't have any bits left over.
It looks awesome.
What you need.
I bought the aluminium mesh from Scotts Auto 1 for under $30.00 ( 1.2m x.280mm).
Torx bits (or flat screwdrivers to suit).
Screwdrivers.
Self tapping screws x4.
Silicone.
Tin snips.
It took me an hour to complete from start to finish.
Have fun.
Tony
I will upload some pictures as soon as I work out how.

Hi Tony
Great job and great instructions!
Now that you've had the mesh in place for a while, have you experienced any overheating problems? Does the mesh allow enough airflow to the radiator?
After I bought our Exy, I too was concerned about the exposure and it has been playing on my mind to get something done about it.
Thank you for posting such detailed instructions. I hope to do likewise soon.

Re: My First Big mod for my T31. Radiator protector
G'day Stephen
Sorry for the delay in responding.
It's the best thing I've done to the Exy so far,( LED mirrors this weekend).
I have had no problems with overheating, the car performs just as it did before the mesh went in. ( only looks better)
I've even found a few stones at the base of the mesh that I'm sure were destined for the radiator.

Zhivan
I must admit, it looks very striking on the Platinum colour. It catches my eye every time I walk past the car.

Re: T31. Radiator protector
I'm gonna give this one a go next weekend, did you have any trouble reinstalling those screws in the wheel well ? I'm just imagining taking them off and them not quite lining up when it comes to re-attaching the bumper.
When you feel how soft and fragile the 'fins' on the radiator are it's scary not to give them some decent protectiion.
Thanks for the instructions.

PonchO
There are only 2 screws holding the bumper in front of the tyres.(one each side). Also there are 2 plastic locator clips one each side.
The screws you can see when you take the 3 screws holding the plastic flare on, they are a little tricky to get to because you have to twist your arm around in there.
Once you undo 1, then its a sinch.
Its a great mod to do to Xy and will surely keep the car running cooler for longer.
Have fun.
