Re: 4WD Rear Wheel Torque Display

I got all the major parts the other day, so as I put it together of the next few weeks, I'll see if I can spot anything.
Could be a earth loop or anything....

Kev: I meant to ask, how come in the video the speedo and tach are not moving around near the end of their scale?? Did you find a way to disable them while shooting video? emoticon
I'm pretty sure I saw the fuel gauge go down a fraction...

Re: 4WD Rear Wheel Torque Display

Hi Shawn,

Just a few short stabs of the accelerator while in 4WD LOCK mode and the foot firmly on the brake pedal. Remember, while in LOCK mode, you will get full rear wheel torque with only a little acceleration so that is why the tacho did not move much.

Kev, no mention of your replacing of the 10uF tantalum cap with the 2.2uF LL bi-polar (or did you edit the original parts list earlier in the thread?)

Re: 4WD Rear Wheel Torque Display

You saw that from the video I posted Rich emoticon LOL

No I have not posted that change yet as I was thinking of doing a circuit change once I find what is causing the temperature sensitivity and correct it.

But thanks for reminding me. This now records that part change for anyone (like Shawn) who might want to make a circuit before I finish the other mods.

Just a thought....

Very interesting thread and great work guys...was just thinking about a temp sensor for the transmission as well, that might help to determine how this would effect the rear coupling..i.e is the trans temp contributing to the 4wd system cutting out or changing the amount of torque applied?

I would love to find out what exactly triggers the 4wd cutout.....seems a mystery still.

I thought I read (quite some time ago, now) that the 4WD overheating cutout is actually determined by the current drawn by the 4WD electronic clutch - when it starts to draw too much current, it's an indicator that it's overheating. Now if I can only just remember where I read that...

Update on my display - it's finally FINISHED!!! Even in a case! (Ok well it still needs to have the grey around the LED's coloured-in black with an artline to help hide the imperfect hole I butchered in the case for it emoticon ). I had planned on installing an RJ45 socket on the back of the display case to plug my sensor cable straight into it (with the RJ45 plug on the end of the sensor cable), however the back of the RJ45 socket wouldn't fit due to the tight space inside the case after the PCB is fitted inside it. I'm about to go and plug it back in for a final test-run, and take a quick video clip of it. It doesn't look as fancy as Kev's, but it does the job, and is easily removable if I ever need to take it out (not that Kev would ever want to remove his!)

And another video clip - the first rev is in AUTO mode, the 2nd is in LOCK mode, the final is in AUTO mode again (stationary, with park brake on).

Kev, there didn't seem to be any warm-up delay problems, however it was warm today and still warm in the garage earlier tonight when I took the photos and video. Remember it was the middle of winter when we were playing with them before...

Remember mine was in a case just like yours Rich.
As you say, it does the job and is quite good enough like that.

With my install into the guages ... well someone gave me a challebge and I just had to see if it could be done emoticon

Re: 4WD Rear Wheel Torque Display

A little experiment I tried today...

While "coasting" slightly quicker than normal around a right-hand corner, with feet off all pedals, more torque was given to the rear wheels (even though I was basically just rolling). This proves that there are some fancy electronics involved to do with wheel angle and/or g-forces to put more drive to the rear wheels. Of course, if I had lost traction and was accelerating, the extra drive to the rear wheels would be significant enough to maintain grip and prevent a slide.

Rich,
Congrats on FINALLY getting this thing working. Just shows that persistancy pays off.
