I have a 2005 auto xTrail. In March of this year I went on 3 week holiday to NSW. 1900 odd klicks from Adelaide to Port Stephen over the Great Dividing Range. The same back again. I have a 15ft pop top which all up weighs 1490 kg. We also went up to Port Macquarie for a few days. I have also travelled to the west coast of SA 600 klicks on a 42 degree day.
Never have I had a problem that would need an oil cooler. Why.
Always travel with the O/D off.
The quickest way to heat the transmission fluid is to leave the O/D on and have the gear change, hunt up and down in the gears.

No Vic, the T30 xtrail did not come with the transmission cooler fitted.

Yes, the T31 CVT has them, as I can remember.

There is a cooler of such for the T30 auto, but it is a simple single pipe mounted into the bottom tank of the radiator.

Thanks Jalal & Kev,
I rang the RAC (WA) and they basically said what has already been said here, the fully laden weight of my small van would not be a problem (1200kg) however as has been said here tow with overdrive off to minimise damage to the auto gearbox through jerking etc, also to keep transmission temp down. They said on prolonged trips over many kilometres distance that have rest stops now and then to allow transmission to cool down would help also to avoid overheating damage to the transmission, although this is only a precaution if worried about it.

I think you are now on the correct towing scenario. O/D OFF.
My first day to Port Stephens from Adelaide was 600 K to Hay through a massive dust storm which reduced my speed to 20kph for about 40k.
Considering that we had to stop twice for petrol and an extra time to change drivers, this is probably a minimal when travelling so far in one day.
I did not have any problem with my Trans. When I returned from Port Stephens we had to climb up the hunter Valley and over the Great Dividing Range. This way is a lot steeper than the trip over the range when coming from Adelaide. We had to take the cruise off and travel in 2nd gear with over 4000 revs on but we were not continually changing gear so no problem was encounted except the increase in fuel consumption using 2nd gear.
I travel at 90kph on cruise. Only once you get a steep hill the cruise has to come off. 90kph runs the motor at almost 3400 revs which is in the power band so if I need to speed up for a few hundred meters this is easily done.

Thanks Dave, I have done 45,000 since I have had mine (had 26,000 on it when I bought it) so 71,000 on the clock now. Been a dream run, both towing and non towing, very happy with the Exxy as a tug.
Thanks for the feedback, I'm carting my van around the S/W of WA shortly for three months, then after X'mas all being well doing the big lap for around 2 years. Pretty confident I have the right combination to do it, time will tell.
