X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Hello
This is my first post I line in Tassie and I have nearly made up my mind on purchasing a new x-trail.
But I have read on some different sites that they suffer from the 4wd system overheating when used for a round 20 minutes or longer then disabling it back to 2 wheel drive, has anyone had this problem? or is it a myth.
any replies would be appreciated.
Cheers Peter

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Hi Peter & happy new Year.
Have had 2003 ST series 2 X-trail for past 9 months. Have done just over 17,000 kms with no problems with anything to date. Just returned from Stockton Beach (Newcastle)about 20/30 kms long, 30 minutes ago after driving in "Lock 4WD" for at least 2 hours on very soft sand, over dunes and along the flat hard sand. No problems at all. Tyres were at 16 P.s.i. There were 6/8 other X-Trails there & they handled it o.k. too.
I have been there several times with no problems.

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Hi Peter,
I too have a 2003 Series 2 ST and spent a day last week on Stradbroke Island. Lots of beach driving and some quite challenging soft sand entry and exits.
Probably covered about 40K on sand over the space of 2 or 3 hours (tyres about 20 PSI), with no problems at all, either with heating or bogging. A Forrester travelling with us came to a halt a couple of times and had to be pushed (manpower) or strapped out by the EXy.
Cheers,
Steve.

Thanks Guys for your quick response.
That's Great news, I will be off to the dealer this week and see what kind of price I can get one for.

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Hi All,
I have had this happen to me (series 2 TI). I have found the answer is to use "Auto" mode in sand and only go to "Lock" in bad bits for short periods. This allows the car to go in a out of 4WD as required and hence does not over heat.

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Shane, maybe a good way to check if yours is faulty is to compare yours yo another X-Trail on the same patch of sand. Make sure you're both in the same gear and AUTO mode (and preferably same transmission - automatic or manual, and try and stay in the same gears if they're manual). If the other X-Trail plods along happily long after yours has kicked the bucket (overheated), then that would be very good grounds to go back to Nissan and complain.
Take a video camera (at least for some more footage for all of us to see ).
