Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?

chk out this yahoo X trail site link ...

http://f3.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/kCRFQq_URArGinboiOj23opAGyjgUpY1e3I-bfpMDz2VWGrFXGEyQTtvcbwASmOPurAgbTW9IE9BSvCY9WwqRHuUGxs/Word%204X4.doc

someone may be able to forward it to you via fax if the link doesn't work.

The trouble with this sort of thing is that too many mechanics don't understand the system and hence whether its working properly or not. They're relying too much on the diagnostic equipment only.

Hi Exy Ti, the link you posted above is not working. Can you please advise where on the Yahooy Forum did you find the document or information? so I can updated the link or create a .pdf file which we can all see.

Shane & ado5 - I'd say that there's something wrong with yours if they're both overheating - especially with Shane's when he had virtually the same conditions as 3 other X-Trails and none of the other 3 had any overheating problems.

I have a feeling the consult/diagnostic software wont be able to determine the cause of the problem though...

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?

Hi,

Thanks for all the info.

Looks like it is going to be a tricky problem to get them to fix.

The only way I think I could prove to the dealer, Nissan, and myself that it is a problem with my car and not all X-Trails is if I got a new set of tyres (to eliminate these as a possibility) and went for a drive with some other x-Trails. If the problem still persisted and I created a mini documentary which compared it to the other x-Trails they might be convinced.

Jalal, when you went to Stockton beach did you drive along the beach for a period of time or up and down the dunes?

I noticed that it didn't really happen when I was going up and down the dunes. Probably because I was going faster and the sand was harder after the rain.

When I was driving along the beach the sand was soft with ruts from other cars. Maybe the wheel rotation factor mentioned in the pdf kicked in. It happened after about 15-20 minutes of driving and then I stop the car altogether and wait for about 5-10 minutes. It then only works in 4wd for about 5-10 minutes and I stop and wait again. The period the car works for in 4wd gets shorter after each wait. By the time I got to the wreck it was only working for about 2 minutes at a time.

Do you have any technique tips for driving x-Trails along soft sand? I was in 4WD Lock mode and travelling at around 40kms/hour. I have noticed that my x-Trail doesn't seem to change to Auto mode like others have mentioned they do when you reach a certain speed.

I've been to Stockton before and tried to use only 4WD Auto mode but the problem still happens. The document even mentions that it can still happen in Auto mode.

Any suggestions/advise in trying to recify the problem or prevent it from happening would be greatly appreciated although I don't want to do anything that will effect the warranty.

Thanks,

Ado5

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?

Hi ado5,

I and other 3 xtrail (including Shane who had problems with his 4WD system) were driving on the beach as well as up and down some dunes.

On our run to the shipwreck, the sand was very soft as you mentioned and this is where Shane had problems with the flashing of the 4WD system (we didn't).

I had to use 4WD lock on a couple of time, including reversing out of I spot I parked right in front of the ship wreck, as the tyres had dug themselves in, but I drove in Auto mode for the rest of the trip and didn't have any problems.

From what is being mentioned by xtrailers having this problem, it seems to be more common with the Manual, rather than Auto (this just my personal observation and not a rule)

Auto is better on sand to some degree in any case.

I also noticed that the clutch was working overtime with Manual xtrails and you could really smell it burning.

Good luck with proving this to nissan, but am sure the more people complain about this fault, the more seriously they would consider a fix for it.

Hey Guys,

Iv'e been a little quiet last few days due to family tragedy.

Any way on the subject. Nissan advised not to compare other nissans to mine but what else can you do.

Tyres have nothing to do with it and even in a magazine the Xtrail was the best of the soft roaders but had over heating 4wd problem. I will continue

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?

Hi Ado5,

I have just returned from the Bribie and experienced every single problem in exact order you described in your last post. In fact this is how I found this forum, I was looking to find if this is a common problem around.
I have a 6/2003 ST auto Xtrail and this was my 3rd visit to the same beach. This time conditions were different than last time. I had to drive on the soft send because high tide. Did not change the tyre pressure (255/50/17 Falken light truck tyre) and had to stop many times as the 4wd-locked system would go back to 2wd. Restarting the engine helped initially as it would take me back to locked 4wd but as you described in your post the problem always came back and every time sooner than the last time.

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?

Hi guys, has anyone thought that this problem may be exagerated by low profile tyres & high tyre pressures!! The lower the profile of the tyre, the less sidewall flex you get when lowering pressures, therefor the shorter the footprint of the tyre & the less flotation you get which causes the vehicle to work a lot harder than it should. Spent days running around Robe SA on soft sand with no problems, running 14lb cold in the tyres but mine are a 70 series profile tyre. Just a thought!

No it is not the tyres as I am also running the 70 series tyres and ran at 16lb pressure same as everyone else when we went to stockton.
