Clutch issues and potential upgrades
I have a 2005 Series 2, 50k on the clock, manual. After returning from a recent trip on Stradbroke Island I have noticed what I believe to be a slipping clutch. That is, when I put the foot on the accelerator rapidly the tacho jumps however the car speed remains constant until a one or two second delay passes, and with a small shudder the car starts to accelerate. If I gently depress the accelerator the speed does increase without too much fuss.
Firstly, does this sound like a slipping clutch? Secondly, repairs? Could it be related to low oil levels, poor adjustment of cable etc? Lastly, if the clutch is not repairable by means of adjustments does anyone have any tips on replacement? Heavy duty, replace the flywheel, etc?
I do like to get on to the beach from time to time and I tow the trailer occasionally to the tip or pick up some hay etc, max load to tow never exceed 350-400kg.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I never thought my driving style would burn through a clutch but I have proven myself wrong here I fear!

Reddragon is right of coarse. You can get a replacement friction and pressure plate for the standard flywheel - that is all we have in Aus and OK if you want to keep it standard.
The alternative is to import a lighter flywheel and clutch combo - this will give you mcuh snappier performance but probably not as good for frequent heavy towing, or slow off-roading.

50k km sounds low for a clutch replacement, assuming normal driving style.
Could it be possible that some sand or something got in and is causing the issue since you have just come back from the beach? Someone should know if this is even physically possible.

Ok, I have enquired about the JWT clutch and flywheel and bringing it in from the US seems fairly reasonable. Is there an Australian distributor by chance?
Does anyone have any opinion on installing a clutch/flywheel combo like this?
Is anyone in Brisbane familiar with a good Xtrail mechanic who will supply labour only in installing it for me?

I've been using the same mechanic for the last 10 years to service and repair my 89 camaro. Excellent diagnostic skills, old skill repairer, rather than just replacing with a new part. He's located in Enogerra.

So if sand can possibly get in, should we be looking for a sand guard mod for the manual gearbox bell housing which would still allow ventilation while keeping the sand out ?

An update on the clutch.
It is all fixed, a new Exedy Sport Tuff clutch with a rigid flywheel was installed.
What a different feel tis setup has to the old system.
The all up cost, $1350 for the clutch and $900 labour, sure beats the $3450 is was quoted by the local dealer and the $2800 quoted by a far away dealer.
Also, when the clutch was being installed the mechanic advised me the RHF wheel bearing was in need of replacement. This has been carried out by the dealer under warranty. The interesting comment is that 'we have been replacing a few of these lately'. So if any of you have a car nearing the end of its warranty, like mine, I can only advise to check out your wheel bearings as it sounds like they could be an underrated or faulty item in few vehicles.
