Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades
hi to all, i tell you what dont take the xtrail to the sand dune, it burn ur clutch like hell, i learn it the hard way, maybe i dont have the correct tyre for the day, just normal H/T tyres. I just came back from stockton beach (Anna Bay) with my 05 xtrail, i smell the clutch burning pretty bad, that bad, that i couldnt make it back home, stuck half on the freeway from anna bay to hornby. Have to tow it back home. i tell u towing free is not cheap from there to my join, $500 they want. if you have roadside you get 50k free and then $4.40 each k after that with NRMA. I have shop around for a new clutch Heavy duty plus rigid flywheel $800 not incl labour. But i found a Standard clutch for $350 without rigid flywheel from Clutch Brake Australia in smithfield.
Alot of people told me rigid flywheel is a solid flywheel not dual mass that come in Standard, it with cause vibration in the long run. So i end up using the same dual mass flywheel just sand it down abit, because u cant machine the flywheel.
NOTICE.. it not easy changing the clutch i pretty much ripped the whole motor and gearbox out together, u need a hoist for this job doing at home not recommended it, impossible to take the gearbox out with dropping the motor, that y they charge a arm n a leg for labour.
But now it all together now n she go very smooth, better then before.
I do it again went i have better tyres.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades
Mine is at Nissan at the moment with the gearbox out.
I kept getting a burning clutch smell when I parked the car in the garage when I got home.
The clutch has gone, virtually non existant and the flywheel is blue from the heat.
When they called me and told me that the clutch has gone, they asked what I tow with it, (I never mentioned that to them) makes me wonder if what they tell you about its towing capacity in the long run is true.
They left the motor in and ripped out all the sub frame, pulled the front left wheel out, disconnected the font tailshaft and pulled the box out.
The dual mass flywheel can be machined for around $80 using a special jig, but the problem with this is because the flywheel is so thin, machining it further will make it thinner, meaning it won't take long to burn out again.
A new dual mass flywheel from Nissan is $2200.00 plus tax, aftermarket $1350.00.
Still waiting on a call from Nissan regarding warranty, not holding my breath.
Got a price on a solid flywheel and normal clutch after market and from Nissan themselves whom have done this in T30's, this cost is approx $1000.00 supply only.
I just a bit concered about vibration, but reading other posts, this may be the only way to go.
This is a problem in the Navaras as well, premature clutch failure.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades
Maybe for a T30 you can, but there are no heavy duty clutch packages available for the T31 yet.
Only standard replacements.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades
Does anyone know if the clutch on the manual diesel is the same as the petrol model? I know the gearbox ratios are different but that doesn't mean it is a completely different gearbox. I want to tow my 16ft fiberglass boat. Boat and trailer weigh 1100kg plus whatever fuel and camping gear I throw in. I was thinking that the maual diesel would be the best combination but now I am confused. Other parts of the forum tell of trouble with a CVT especially if it gets hot, and the auto diesel is only rated for towing up to 1350kg so I would be dangerously close the limit. I haven't purchased an X-trail yet, but this will be a pretty important factor in my decision.
Thanks for your advice
Mark

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades
The auto diesel does not have the CVT used in the petrol model it is a "conventional" 6 speed box

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades
Hi Alan & Phillipa
Thanks, I am aware of the different auto transmissions on diesel and petrol models.
My point is that both auto and manual petrol models as well as manual diesel are all rated for 2000kg towing while the auto diesel is only rated for 1350 kg and my requirement is too close for comfort to the 1350 kg limit on the auto diesel- (maybe that belongs to the towing thread). I am trying to find out - if Tony's manual ST (T31) wears the clutch out like the T30's in this thread then will the manual diesel also have the same problems, or does the diesel model have a different clutch set-up?
Cheers
Mark

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades
Hi Mark
I had a look at the T31 ESM and it shows one clutch to suit both Petrol and diesel engines.,
The answer to your question is yes, they do share the same clutch.
The only difference is that the petrol clutch is 240mm and the diesel is 250mm in diameter.
It looks like warranty are not going to cover my repair, there were no faulty parts found, still doesn't answer why it went so prematurely.
Nissan Australia were like talking to a brick wall.
I have one more avenue before giving up on Nissan and that happens this morning.
