T31 - Hill Start Assist
How does everyone like the Hill Start Assist? I have just gotten a Manual Diesel and find myself fighting the hill start. Typically on a hill start I would not use the handbrake and when I wish to take off I would not have any problems. I am finding however that the hill start is kicking in and I am litrally fighting it to get off the line. The manual states it works for 2 seconds or there abouts. I have driven Hino trucks with this feature (but it holds indefinately when no accelerator or brake) but never had to fight it off the line.
I have had one good takeoff on a hill where I was much slower going from the brake to the accelerator. Maybe I just have to learn to get sloppy with my hill starts. Could be a problem though when driving an 'ordinary' manual.
Anyone got any sure fire techniques for this?

Re: T31 - Hill Start Assist
I haven't found it to be much of an issue with mine. It only seems to kick in on reasonably steep slopes (as it should) and yes i can feel it still holding the brakes for a split second while I am taking off, but not enough that it bothers me. Then again, I haven't done that many take off's where its actually kicked in.

I think it's a question of getting used to it. I am quite conscious when I apply the brakes on an incline to feel the hill start engage. If I forget to 'think' about it the two second delay can sometimes be a bit short and take you by surprise.
I like the feature when giong down a hill too.

I found that it will only engage when you have the car in 1st gear and the clutch depressed. When I have it in nuetral, the hill assist doesn't activate.
Give it a go.

Re: T31 - Hill Start Assist
Yep mine is the same, it has to be in gear. I had a quick read of the manual (found it in the far reaches of the huge glovebox!) and it mentions the same.
Hill decent control is another kettle of fish, i tried that out last weekend on a steep dirt ramp, worked very well!

Re: T31 - Hill Start Assist
Hahaha, I didn't even realise the Exy had Hill Start Assist, until I read this thread.... and I've had my car 3 days now!
Wife was complaining that it does roll back a little when she takes off, as shes still getting used to the clutch, so is there a point where it kicks in or something? Does it have to be a large hill?
I haven't noticed it either, but I haven't really taken off from any large hills....
Cheers,
Chris.

Re: T31 - Hill Start Assist
Hi Chris
I think it kicks in on gradients of around 10%.
It gets alittle annoying sometimes because it holds the brakes what seems a little too long when you just want the car to go.

Re: T31 - Hill Start Assist
My hill start kicks in even at slight slopes. It seems to hold far longer than 2 seconds on a slight slope but appears to stick to the 2 second rule when on bigger inclines. It does seem to hold the car a little but you can feel it disengaging.

Re: T31 - Hill Start Assist
I wonder how the calibration for Hill Start is set up because I would like to increase the hold time of 2secs.
An old manual Forester of mine had it activated as long as the clutch was depressed and the brake pedal touched to engage it. I think this setup is preferable to the 2sec preprogrammed time though you do get used to it.
