No Power

Not sure if this is the right place to post this as I'm not sure exactly what the problem is yet but this seemed the most appropriate place.

Headed off down to Nowra for the long weekend with the intention of looking around the area a bit and doing the final trek in the Boiling Billy "4WD Treks Close to Sydney" book. We've done most of the treks that are closest to Sydney and I was looking forward to spending the day on some new tracks.

Set off from Nowra and followed the tarmac until it ran out and with a grin on my face set off up the dirt tracks.......the grin didn't last long. We hit the first hill after about half a km and the car just stopped. It wouldn't go up the hill. I tried in D and in 1st and the same result both times. I have no idea why but the moment it hit a hill it wouldn't hold rev's. I tried a few times, hitting the hill with 2500-3000 rev's (usually more than enough for a controlled ascent of a hill like this) and the moment it hit the hill the rev's dropped to about 1800. I think there must be a big flat spot in the power band around here as I've noticed in the past that it doesn't like steeper hills, even on tarmac, at under 2000 rev's and once the rev's dropped it just crawled for a few feet and stopped. It didn't make any real effort to get up the hill. Normally, when in manual mode it may get to the point where it won't accellerate as the hill is too steep but I've never felt it just die as it did here. The rev's dropped much faster than the steepness of the hill should have dictated, as if it was being held back electronically but I couldn't see any reason for this. I have been up much steeper hills than this before without any problems and while I was driving on dirt, it wasn't loose, soft or rocky enough to expect any wheel spin so the ESP shouldn't have had anything to worry about (didn't think to try it without the ESP to see if this was the case!) Even in D with my foot on the floor it made no difference. Normally with the CVT, when you go up a hill and put your foot down it increases the rev's to 4000 or 5000 to get into the peak power band and holds it there. It wouldn't do this. I could get the rev's to climb at all. Just had to give up, turn around and head back to Nowra.

It's still driving perfectly well on the road. Didn't notice any difference on the road at all, even on some of the twisty roads around Kangaroo Valley so I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. I popped into Nowra Nissan and asked them and they had never heard of it happening before. They said they had all done some driver training in the X-Trails and had been impressed at how steep it could climb so they couldn't offer any immediate advice. It's due service in the next 2 weeks so I'll ask the garage to check it over when it's in for the sevice but just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything like this. It felt as if it was getting bogged but it was on a dry track that wasn't slippery or excessively steep. It did have a bit of weight in as well (all the camping stuff) but again, it's nothing that we haven't done before. Quite concerning really as I'd hate to be out on a track someday and get in between 2 steep slopes and find that I can't climb either of them to get out. I hope the garage can find some answers.

Re: No Power

Paul
Sounds odd.
I wouldn't worry too much, its probably a faulty sensor or it could go into 'limp home mode' as soon as it reaches a certain pitch, ie: going up a steep hill.
Ask your dealear to do an ECU code check and it should rear its ugly head.

Re: No Power

Paul, I would be persistent with Nissan when requesting them to look into it. Make sure from the very start that you want them to thoroughly investigate it. The last thing you want is when it comes time to collect it from servicing, for them to say "we couldn't replicate the problem or find anything wrong" as you have quite obviously discovered something seriously wrong with it.

Are you able to find any tracks or particularly steep roads near the particular dealership you are taking it to for the service? If you could I am sure they would appreciate you being able to demonstrate it, or at least tell them where to try it out to see for themselves.

One thing that comes to mind - are you able to replicate the situation on a relatively steep bitumen road and leaving the handbrake on? I hope you didn't do this by mistake while offroad emoticon

Re: No Power

mm sounds like a faulty sensor or something with the ESP.

As Rich said, make sure you get Nissan to thoroughly check it and maybe take it back out once they have looked over it and see if it happens again.

I've not been able to replicate it since. I drove up some fairly steep bitumen roads and had no problem. I even tried another steepish dirt path later in the day and it seemed to be OK with that as well. Almost made me think I imagined the whole thing. I wish it was something as simple as leaving the handbrake on. Would be embarrassing but at least I'd know what it was. Unfortunately that can't be it as I'd been driving for half an hour on bitumen before it happened and I didn't stop when I hit the dirt. emoticon

I certainly will be as I have little enough faith in them anyway on past experience. I'll be abundantly clear that they need to resolve this. It's booked in for it's service on Friday so we'll see what they come up with. They have been forewarned as they asked when I booked it if there was anything specific that needed looking at so I mentioned this. I definitely want a conclusive answer as it's not something I want to have in the back of my mind when I'm out in the back of beyond. We're usually by ourselves when we're out so don't really want to get stranded between 2 hills or for the problem to get worse and potentially leave me with no power at all without anyone there to help.

Unfortunately I don't know of any suitable hills nearby. Was thinking the same myself but we're right in the centre of the northern beaches in Sydney so there's not many off road tracks here.

Yeh, I definitely want to test it out, hopefully this weekend. Does anyone know where there is a track with some reasonably steep sections close to Sydney?

Cheers,

Re: No Power

Hi Paul,

How much steeper than Kentwell Rd at Alambie was the dirt hill ?
Maybe I could find you a steep hill in the area as I drive around there quite a bit and there are some.

Also, how long was this steep dirt hill before you noticed the lack of power ?

Maybe you could do the test on a bitumen road during the rain to simulate the slipperiness of the dirt ?

Re: No Power

Hi Kev,

Never driven up there, though I drive past it every day as I work in Brookvale. Will try it today if I get a chance. Will also give it a go the next time we get some heavy rain and see what happens, though I don't think any is forecast until after it goes into the garage.

The rev's dropped the moment I hit the hill. It wasn't a gradual decrease in power, it was an immediate decrease in power, far more rapid than you'd expect as a result of going up any hill. It felt like I was driving a manual doing a hill start and had brought the clutch up too soon with insufficient rev's. The rev's dropped to what is little more than tick over and it crawled for a few feet then gave up.

Will let you know how I go on Kentwell Rd later.

Cheers,

Re: No Power

Hi Kev,

Had a drive around Kentwell Rd last night and I think the hill I was on was a little steeper than that but not too much. Found another steeper hill on my way home (Seaview Ave - one of the roads that twists up the hill between the south end of Curl Curl beach and the top of the hill at Freshwater). I manged to get the car do do something similar to what I experienced on this, though not quite as severe. Good to know that I managed to replicate it, at least in part, somewhere close to home so I've got somewhere to test it again later.

Dropped it off at the garage this morning so we'll see what they say later today.

Re: No Power

Does no reply from Paul tonight mean that Nissan still has it and wont tell him what's wrong with it, or that they can't find what's wrong with it? emoticon

(sitting on the edge of my seat to find out!)
