Automatic Lockup Torque Converter operation in 3rd & 4th

Hi all,

I have a question for anyone with detailed experience with automatic transmissions.

Our automatic has a lockup torque converter. The specs of when it locks up are below.
Image
Now I have NEVER had it lockup in 3rd (with OD off) and it ALWAYS seems to lockup too soon in 4th, so what are the "set value" and "set opening" for speed and throttle position ?

The reason I ask is that the constant lock/unlock during normal city driving would surely contribute to abnormal wear and the resistance to lockup in 3rd would increase fuel consumption.

My opinion would be that speeds under say 70kph should not lockup in 4th and speeds over say 50kph should lockup in 3rd.

Any ideas ?

I know this question was not one that anyone could answer but hoping one of our techies (Taylor or someone else) could ask some questions on "the inside" emoticon

Anyway, for the rest of you, could someone who also has a T30 automatic do a test sometime and see if they have their torque converter lockup in 3rd (OD off) ?

I have an auto T30, but have no idea how to do the test emoticon I read the attachment you provided above but it doesn't explain how to do the test. I assume I need to be doing considerable speed (80+) to be in 3rd gear. Do I need to put the boot into it to see if it goes down a gear? Is that what you're asking? Or am I way off-track? (no pun intended)

Re: Automatic Lockup Torque Converter operation in 3rd & 4th

Hi Rich,

Just feel how the torque converter unlocks and locks up when in OD (4th) and cruising along.
In an 80kph area, start at 60kph and squeeze your foot down slowly and gradually. First you will feel the engine start to pull and the revs not really climb fast (just like in a manual). Then as you accelerate further you will feel it drop out of lockup and the revs will pick up in a small jump (about 500rpm) and respond to the pedal (rather than road speed) as an automatic usaully does. Once this has happend you will probably be cruising at 80kph. If you maintain that speed then you will see the revs drop slightly (500rpm) as the torque converter locks up again. This happens very easily in OD and at slow speeds.

Next, do the same test but with OD off (3rd).
You should find the same thing does not happen and that when OD is off you never get the engine pulling without the revs following the pedal movement and they never seem to follow the road speed. This means the torque converter has not locked up.

Now, what I want to know is at what speed and pedal position WILL it lockup in 3rd ?

Re: Automatic Lockup Torque Converter operation in 3rd & 4th

I don't suppose it makes any difference if the 4WD mode is in 2WD or AUTO? I can feel the difference in acceleration between the two under normal acceleration from stand-still (as the torque-split display confirms).

Next time I'm in an 80 zone, I'll try to remember to give it a try emoticon

It might be possible to try it with OD on in a 60 zone as I usually leave OD on in day-to-day city/suburban driving, but it does feel like the engine is labouring a little at 60 when trying to maintain speed uphill...

It does not matter whether 2wd or 4wd Rich.
Thanks, look forward to your impressions.

Re: Automatic Lockup Torque Converter operation in 3rd & 4th

ive had some thoughts about this too. if im really fanging it in 3rd and at high rpm (in 2WD) and press over drive "on" without backing my foot off and the car takes off quicker all of a sudden before it eventually shifts in to 4th, its like a 3.5 ish gear hahah. its definalty the lock up torque convertor. its like overdrive is a 2 stage sort of thing? i only noticed it about 10 months ago. sorry boys i havent got any inside info on this one. now i wonder if its possible to go into the automatic electrics via consult 2/3 and test it if not set different values? im guessing that you can check that the solenoid is actuating but i doubt there would be any values that could changed.

I've also wondered if there is a way to change the stall ratio value so the auto kicks down a little sooner, much like the power/econ switch does in other auto transmissions.

Sorry, I've had no chance to test this out yet; the X-Trail has been having a holiday while we have another vehicle to drive around in with free fuel... Still got it for a few more weeks, and will have to remember to start the X-Trail occasionally to make sure the battery doesn't go flat! emoticon

No problems Rich, thanks for letting me know it's not been forgotten. When you get to it will be fine.
